DOGSTOCK 2007
The independent festival Dogstock is taking place for the third consecutive year on Saturday, the 25th of August at ‘Paradise Place’ in Pomos, Paphos. The festival is organised by a group of professional and amateur musicians, who are also partaking in the festival with their own bands. Last year’s festival was a great success and helped to establish Dogstock as one of the most significant music and art happenings on the island. With an almost non-existent budget and with minimum advertising the team achieved a rather unusual evening for the Cypriot standards which impressed and is still being talked about.
..
Dogstock’s aim is to uphold the local talent and at the same time inspire by presenting new talent from abroad, covering a wide range of musical genres. Dogstock 2006 hosted performances by rock band Masters of Disguise from London, Shillopelles (a group of ten girls that was put together especially for the festival), Trio Tekke (re-arranged Greek rempetika), alternative rockers Asleep from Zurich, jazz saxophonist Mike Fletcher from Birmingham, acoustic duo Rewinders, jazz /ethnic guitarist Alkis Agathokleous and many more.
..
This year’s production is presenting a similar number of performers with the addition of a number of short experimental theatrical performances. Like last year the line-up will be divided between two stages, one acoustic and one electric. In addition to the Cypriot acts, there will be acts from Greece, New York, London and Switzerland. A more detailed schedule and biographies of each act follow below.
..
People who are travelling to the festival can stay at the camping site of Polis Chrysohous. There are also apartments and rooms for rent in Polis Chrysohous, Argaka and Pomos, but make sure you book early. There will be food (Lebanese cuisine, sandwiches) drinks and coffee sold at the festival at reasonable prices. Tickets are £8 and they will be sold in advance in Nicosia at Kala Kathoumena coffee shop and New Division Pub and at Paradise Place in Pomos. Tickets will also be available at the festival entrance. The will also be sold on the entrance of the festival. Starting time: 1:30p.m. For extra comfort don’t think twice to bring a cushion or two or even a comfortable mattress! 1. SCAB LEVEL (GR)
..
Scab Level from Thessaloniki is the band that’s going to headline Dogstock this year. Even though they released their first album only two years ago they have been around since 1995. It was then when Kleanthis and Makis decided to put together a band that was inspired by the sounds that were coming from abroad at the time, instead of imitating the saturated attempts of the Greek- English singing bands of the time.
..
Scab Level encountered the usual problems that Greek bands come across. They changed a lot of band members, went through long periods of inactivity but against the odds, managed to stay ‘alive’ till the present day being more active than ever before.
..
Their first album «Peaches» (Run Devil Run, 2005) is the proof that they never ceased to experiment with their sound. On this album they have added elements from ska and punk while maintaining the musical direction that characterised them during their first years, resulting a sound that won over many listeners and at the same time impressed the press.
Today they are working on the music for their second album and occasionally perform live in various places around Greece.
..
This is the band that was formed in July 2005 exclusively for ‘Dogstock 2005’. This year the band is making its third appearance again exclusively for Dogstock with new members. It consists of ten female performers who will entertain with covers in their own unique and fun way.
..
Bob Parins is one of the finest young singer/songwriters in New York at the moment. He has been a member of the band The Brown Flamingos which enjoyed cult success for a couple of years in the turn of the century. He has worked as a sideman with Rufus Wainwright and members of Ween. The past couple of years he has been working on his own project and has recently released independently his debut album ‘The Kissing Rocks’ with his band True Love Always which has received impressive reviews. He was also featured on New York radio station WNYC and National Public radio. Here’s what they said about the album:
..
"At least half of this disc ranks among the best of the year... It's an eclectic blend indeed of songs and sounds... Through it all, Parins consistently brings two things: immaculate craftsmanship and a sense of humour."
-30Music.com
..
"One of the most disparate collections I've ever heard... The Whole album is a must-listen."
-The Dover Post
..
"Refreshing newness with a faint Beatlesque vibe. Something special."
-ADD Reviews
..
"This is a record unafraid to pay homage to what it loves most and it does so with such gusto that it’s almost impossible to ignore."
- Firstcoastnews.com
..
"...The strongest melodies, harmonies and arrangements that you're going to hear in pop music these days."
-Luther Hermanson
..
Parins who plays guitar and sings will be appearing at Dogstock backed by a band of consisting of Cypriot musicians: Mario Michael on bass, Marianna Moumtzi on drums and Lefteris Moumtzis on keyboards.
..
The Shower Curtains care little for trends. They’ve been doing their thing which is rough energetic garage punk since 1991 when they were formed. The Shower Curtains deliver a stunning and highly energetic performance at every show, driven by their charismatic front man Guggi. This year they have released the EP ‘Take a shower daily’ which will be available for sale at the festival.
..
This is the second band from Switzerland that visits Cyprus following Asleep who also appeared at Dogstock and other Cypriot venues last year.

5. TRIO TEKKE (CY, UK)
..
Cypriots Antonis Antoniou (tzouras) and Lefteris Moumtzis (acoustic guitar) formed trio Tekke in London towards the end of 2005. With the addition of the young Chilean / English contrabass player Colin Somervell they established from the start their personal sound, something they call ‘Reggetika’. Reggetika are re-arranged old Greek rempetika songs (the old Greek blues) fused with reggae and other contemporary rhythms. Trio Tekke, having studied the tremendous heritage of the ‘rempetika’ songs and with enormous respect to all its great composers, explore the possibility of expressing themselves by playing these songs within a different context which derives from their musical past, their influences and experiences as individuals. Along the way original music has been composed in this style mainly by Antoniou who is trio’s main songwriting force.
..
Trio Tekke have performed in Dublin, Cork (Ireland), Cordoba, Granada (Spain) and in Coventry and London (England) where they currently live. ?hey also appeared at last year’s Dogstock. They are unofficially distributing a mini-record with the name ‘Ta Reggetika’.

Well known songs from Smyrni, Egypt, Cyprus and Turkey and more recent compositions by Night Ark, Eldan Mansurov and Nikos Xydakis will also be performed.
..
Savvas Houvartas is one of the most active guitarist / composers on the island. He gigs regularly all over the island and has performed at festivals abroad and on various recordings. His original material partly instrumental and partly with Greek lyrics is a fusion of contemporary Greek music and jazz. At Dogstock he will present new work from his EP ‘Acoustic’, backed by Rodos Panayiotou on percussion, Andreas Rodosthenous on bass, Charis Ioannou on saxophone and Vicky Anastasiou on vocals.
