The Dolphin Communication Project (DCP) looks at how animals, particularly dolphins, communicate and attempts to shed more light on the meaning of their interactions. Ongoing since 1991, questions focus on communication among Atlantic spotted dolphins in The Bahamas, Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins in Japan, and common bottlenose dolphins in human care in Honduras and The Bahamas. In addition to studies of communication and behavior, DCP research associates also investigate comparisons between species, geographies, and habitats, as well as their own research topics.
DCP team members use specially developed underwater video and directional bioacoustic recording equipment (the MVA) to localize individual dolphins as the source of sounds, to facilitate the examination of relationships between dolphin sounds and behaviors. This unique study of dolphin communication in the wild collects data under water and uses non-invasive methods to observe and record dolphins in their own habitat. DCP is also the only group to apply the exact same protocols for data collection and analyses on wild dolphins to observations of bottlenose dolphins in human care at two facilities - at Roatan Institute for Marine Sciences (RIMS), Roatan, Honduras, and at Dolphin Encounters in Nassau, The Bahamas.
Dolphins are considered to be highly intelligent creatures because of their apparently complex communication system and highly cognitive capabilities. A better understanding of the minds and social lives of non-human animals is one result of examining their methods of communication. Still, dolphins, in fact all non-human animals, must not be measured according to how close they come to equaling human intelligence and development, but rather accepted and appreciated for what they are. It is through studies of this type that we may learn how better to interact with our environment, and its inhabitants.
Anyone interested in learning more about DCP, our field sites, where our research is going in the future and those of you interested in supporting our mission!
The Dolphin Communication Project's mission statement is to promote awareness of marine mammal conservation & to increase knowledge of communication behaviors between and among all dolphin species. DCP works toward advancing these goals by organizing/conducting underwater research expeditions/studies in dolphin communication, encouraging cetacean intern experiences, and fostering collaborative endeavors with scientific and educational programs.

Squidoo is giving DCP another chance to win some much needed cash - but we can’t do it without your help!
Each day until Thanksgiving, Squidoo.com will donate $1,000 to one of their registered charities. On Thanksgiving day, they will be giving away a whopping $5,000! In order for a charity to be eligible to win the cash prize, someone (maybe you?) has to create a “Squidoo lens” (AKA webpage) about a Thanksgiving food related topic. It could be the Ultimate Thanksgiving Gravy, secret stuffing, a goofy or unexpected Thanksgiving food tradition, etc. After you’ve created the lens, simply choose to donate to the Dolphin Communication Project as your selected charity and we'll be entered to win the daily giveaway. It’s free and easy and would be a huge help to DCP!

GET OUT OF THE CLASSROOM....AND GET INTO THE FIELD!
Looking for an exciting, hands-on summer course? The Dolphin Communication Project is pleased to offer a FIELD COURSE IN CETACEAN ECOLOGY in Bimini, Bahamas. DCP, a non-profit research and education group, has been studying Atlantic spotted and bottlenose dolphins in this area since 2001.
The Dolphin Communication Project is currently seeking interns for the summer of 2009. These internships have both field and office components, both of which are mandatory, and total 9–12 weeks.
My father, Dr. Dwight Wayne Batteau, and Dr. John Lilly were partners in the Man/Dolphin Communication Project in the 19960s. Its good to know that the dream lives on.
