Donald Quan’s music career began when he won a composition
competition at the age of 14.
That pivotal event started a diverse musical journey that has
spanned many idioms, styles and forms.
Born in Toronto and schooled at the Berklee College of Music in Boston,
Donald is a multi-instrumentalist, playing piano and viola as well as most of the
instruments in his extensive 500+ collection.
As an artist Donald explores many kinds of expressive paths.
Taking his camera on his many travels, he has an eye for visual interest as well as an ear for the complexities of sound.
Inspired by all types of art, Donald has a deep appreciation of the creative impulse.

Especially well known for his work in the area of World Music, his CDs "Tear of the Sun" (with Ron Korb) and "Invocata" (recorded at Real World Studios) Donald has garnered acclaim worldwide. First touring Europe with Loreena McKennitt in 1996 for her "Book of Secrets" tour. Now touring Europe again for Loreena's newest album "An Ancient Muse", Donald has also toured China and Japan, with collaborators Ron Korb and George Gao, playing music dubbed "New Chinese Jazz". A blend of jazz improvisation and traditional Chinese melodies.
Collaborating with Ron Korb to create the Toronto 2008 Olympic Bid theme song Expect the World, with performances by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and Toronto’s Samba Squad. Donald was nominated for Gemini Awards in 2002 and 2003 and was 2005’s recipient of SOCAN’s International Television Series Award.
He has performed and recorded with singer/songwriter Loreena McKennitt, Canadian rock legends Lighthouse, has premiered several new media compositions in concert with the Toronto Tabla Ensemble and is musical director for the annual Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards.
Donald’s film music company, Q Music, has provided composing and music services to hundreds of television, film, radio and multi-media productions including Relic Hunter (Fireworks), Mutant X (Tribune Entertainment), and Tracker (Lions Gate) as well as feature films Expecting and the new CBC pilot Getting Along Famously.
Donald is an artist without creative limits, he is able to communicate the intangible using various mediums, idioms and styles. As a Musician, Composer, Artist, Director, Photographer, and businessman, Donald is both an enigma and a great spirit.
