Influences
There are so many influences but I will give you the short list.
George Jones, Hank Williams Sr. and Jr., Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, David Allen Coe, Clint Black, Vince Gill, Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson, George Strait, Kenny Chesney, Tim McGraw, Gary Allen, Travis Tritt, Marty Stewart, Montgomery Gentry. And SO MANY MORE!!
Like I said there have been many great artists that have influenced me.
I grew up in a tiny little hole in the woods in upstate New York called Bloomville, which is about 3 hours and a world away from New York City.
No stop lights, no grocery store, no school, just two little country churches, a little country store, a one room post office and a Volunteer Fire Dept. Home was a small horse farm. I grew up working on the horse farm and the local dairy farms in the area. The county fair in Walton, NY was the most exciting thing every year, when I was a kid!! I recently decided to chase the dream to Nashville an live in a little town just east of Music City!!
My first exposure to music was my daddy's record player. Playing Hank Williams, George Jones, Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, Jim Reeves, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings and many other greats!!
I am not a music writer or a musician. I am a lyricist.
The story behind "I'll never walk away" may not be that unique, but I think it is worth telling. I had never attempted to write a song and one night while on the telephone with a very special woman in my life, she said "Don, with all the stuff going on in my life, I wouldn't blame you if you just walked away from me." I replied to her, "Sweetheart I will never walk away from you, unless you ask me to." In the back of my mind I thought that sounds like a song in the making. A couple nights later I was sitting in a bar and I started writing things down on cocktail napkins. The next thing I knew, I had the song you are hearing now written! I wish I could say that this story had a happy ending, but shortly after the song demo was done, she walked away from me. I guess that is the way life goes. However, this has inspired more heartfelt lyrics, so I guess everything happens for a reason!! I hope you enjoy the songs!! "Mama Was So Right" was a colaboration with the woman who inspired "I'll Never Walk Away!" "Knoxville in the Rearview" and "She Made a Liar of Me" are the final chapter to the story of she and I. I am sure I will find inspiration elsewhere!!
"I'll Never Walk Away From You" is my first. There are many more to come.
"Knoxville in the Rearview" and "Key to Your Heart" are coming along nicely thanks to the boys from Mile Marker 5!! You guys are awesome!!
"Whiskey Women and Wasted Time" is sounding great along with a number of others I am working on with Tommy Thompson!!
I now have 10 songs in demo production in Nashville. I am having studio quality demos done for "Warrior Angel" "My Amazing Grace" "Knoxville in the Rear View" and "A Friend in Jesus." There will be six never before heard demos coming "Big Red Barn" "Spokes" "Aint been to Heaven" "Sandy and Jim" "Soul Savin Station" and my personnal favorite "Cougar" I am sure you can imagine what that is about! :)
STAY TUNED!!
And I just wrote a Christmas song that you will have to wait for the next holiday season to hear!!
There are just too many to list at this point!! I guess for a guy who never wrote a song until 7 months ago, you could say I am making up for lost time!!
I write from the heart and firmly believe that this is the only way. I am confident that my words convey the heart felt emotions that I am feeling while putting pen to paper (or bar napkin) as the case may be.
I am in search of a publishing company to represent me and get my work out there.
I am also in search of artists to record my songs.
If you are interested please drop me a line.
