In keeping with my counter-establishment anti-security state leanings, I spend as much time as possible in non-establishment, non-traditional, non-white environments. However, in spite of the counter-culture stuff, my human weaknesses are 1) intelligent, sweet women, 2) any situation or site of negotiation that features a disadvantaged position of any under-dog and 3) big gooey NY deli-style cheese cakes. If I have to highlight my strengths--they dwell somewhere in the process between finding and telling the truth. I know how to cut to the chase and I am fortunate to be able to see most things for what they really are.
As a life-time explorer, I have been privileged to have spent several cumulative years as a resident alien in Northern Baja MX, several months in Central America (Montezuma, Chiriqui, City of David, Rio San Juan, Altagalpa, and SJO), 37 beautiful days in Ecuador and 16 non-consecutive months in SE Asia (Sihanookville, Siem Reap, Phnom Penh; Ha Noi, Da Lat, Nha Trang Viet Nam). Consequently, I more often than not prefer the company and circumstances of poor people and other oppressed dispossessed, marginalized, forgotten, and voiceless people; although ironically, many of my long term friends from California act like they are quite affluent. And I do not resent reasonable wealth as long as it comes with a responsible social conscience. On the other hand, white privilege is tragically embedded, normalized, and enabled by the dominant socio-economic system. I personally am not materially affluent. My lack of covetness of material goods, as evidenced by my modest lifestyle has been a curious choice that I even sometimes question when trying to keep up with my old homies. Even while growing up privileged in affluent Orange County, the hippie movement/born-again's love for the poor made more sense than did corporate-consumer based aspirations. But I don't act like a pauper in terms of ability to find forgiveness. I don't talk poor in terms of validating people. Neither do I love poorly so that in terms of intangibles, I am very wealthy. Relative freedom from the pursuit of wealth has allowed me to develop interpersonal skills, such as those which have greatly enhanced interersonal communication and ability to nurture folks. In this way, my health and wealth is manifest in possessing something money can't buy.
As to personal philosopy, I believe that there must be a Creator who we can choose to call our Father, however, I am not the elistist fool who assumes that God has granted protestant-Americans moral and material dominion over the rest of the world. Indeed, I have diminished tolerance for the Cultural Convenience Christians (CCC). CCCs have co-opted man's fear of death for the furtherance of material gain agendas which require controling the masses through the spread of hell fire and damnation type doctrines.
Further, I believe that we Americans, having been born into relative privilege are bound by moral covenent to proceed in life from a state of demonstrable gratitude, always aware that our amazing positions can be replicated everywhere if only we bother to share our time building our communities. We are bound to extraction of our wealth on the backs of others. There is enough for everyone when greed is written out of the acquisition process.
What is more, I believe that the consumer culture detracts from the depth of personal relationships. I don't care what a person has or doesn't have, or what she had and lost, or whatever riches my friends and neighbors have acquired. Although, if a person is righteous in his redistribution obligations, aspires for material goals in order to benefit society at large without exploitation, I think I might willing to participate in selected acquistion operations.
But what I most care about are today's good deeds--or put another way: what can you and I do today that will benefit ourselves by benefiting others? My bottom line is that I treat friends, rich and poor, as if they were the most important persons on earth. And that the reason for doing so is that my perception of God is based on inclusion and validation but null on exclusion and rejection.
Finally, my borrowed motto for these times continues to be "WE HAVE TO LEARN TO FORGIVE WHILE KNOWING THAT TRUE FORGIVENESS ONLY FORGIVES THE UNFORGIVABLE ." -- from Jacques Derrida.
