Hello, my name is Don Hosler. I have been playing drums since the age of 10 and have performed in many local and regional bands.
In 2001 I released my own CD entitled "Boardwalk of Broken Dreams" which included 12 of my own original song compositions dating back to 1990. The CD runs the gamut from driving hard rock to almost easy-listening power ballads, with everything in between. Samples are available to listen to on this page.
The CD was recorded at Clear Studio in Shamokin, PA and Studio E in Valley Forge, PA and engineered by Dennis Kaleta and Eric Lacovera respectively.
Musicianship and songwriting assistance was provided by many musician friends such as :
Chuck Clancy, Suthida Chairatananuwat and Bob Lowe - all of whom performed with me in Aslan at one time or another from 1997-1999. Aslan was probably my most successful band, nearly getting signed to Sony prior to its implosion in 1999.
Andy Kelley , who is a guitarist/vocalist/songwriter extraordinaire that I never had the pleasure of playing with in a full time band, but he did perform some live shows with me in 2001-2002 to promote the CD. Songs like "End of Love's Rainbow" and "Voice of Reason" could not have been written without Andy - in fact, "Voice of Reason" IS Andy ON FIRE ! !
Jason Kyle played keyboards on the CD...Jason and I go way back to when I filled in for Monkey's Uncle in 1999, I played with him in Reemer in 2002, and now coincidentally he is filling in for Out of Nowhere on lead guitar...go figure!
Tommy Eye played in High Voltage and Gemini with me back in 1990-1992 where we co-wrote two songs together, "One Way Ticket" and "Come and Get It" - both of which appear on the CD. Many songs, most notably the title track, are three way collaborations between myself, Tommy and Andy.
Bill Hunt and Tom Bisbano both performed with me in Runaway Train between 1993 and 1994. Two of my original songs , "Fistful of Dreams" and "Somewhere Down the Road", made it into this band and on our debut cassette, but on "Boardwalk" they get an obvious and drastic facelift to fit iin with the quality of the rest of the CD.
Danielle Brida was a relative unknown who cut a karaoke-style CD at engineer Dennis Kaleta's studio, and when I needed a female vocal on "Everytime You Close Your Eyes" the choice was obvious.
Eric Lacovera played with Chuck Clancy in the band Mad Mulligan and his guitar expertise and studio prowess speaks for itself on songs like "Give It To Ya Straight" , "Promises Were Made for Breaking" and "Halfway Over the Wall."
Dan Spangler is a longtime friend of Suthida's and provided the perfect guitar counterpoint to Suthida on "Wild Over You."
Patrick Burke and Troy Lee lent their talents to the track "Wild Over You." Patrick met me when his former band opened for Aslan on several occasions in the late 90s. Troy performed in the best known incarnation of Runaway Train and stepped into the "Boardwalk" sessions to redo his bass tracks on "Fistful of Dreams" and "Somewhere Down the Road" and to also contribute the bass tracks to the title track. The results speak for themselves.
Last but not least, Andrew Michael Kelley (yep, Andy's son !) qualifies as the youngest studio musician on the record by providing some voiceover tracks on the title cut. The kid's gonna be a star !
Well, I don't think I forgot anyone. Copies of the CD are still available...if you like what you hear, drop me a line and tell me what you think !
My most recent project was recorded at Rampage Sound Studios in Lancaster, PA with Bill Burns and was released last November under the moniker of Xhibition: Taking Back the Power. Once again taking the mike and lending his vocal talents was Chuck Clancy, whose powerhouse lead vocals graced all 16 tracks (yes, that's right, sixteen songs are featured on this CD!) on this endeavor. The CD was recorded as a three piece , and a road band was briefly assembled this past April, but unfortunately major differences in mindset brought things to a screeching halt in mid July resulting in the Xhibition partnership was we all know it to be severed permanently. However , what we left behind is a CD I remain very proud of and that garnered several accolades from various sources within the musical community. One thing is certain, Xhibition will ALWAYS be Chuck Clancy, Don Hosler and Bill Burns and the many people who heard the music created within will undoubtedly accept no imitations, regardless of what future "incarnations" may materialize. Loyalty is sadly a very tough commodity in this industry, and I have learned a very valuable lesson from the experience....that just because you think you know someone and seem to be on the same page with them doesn't necessarily mean they will remain on that page indefinitely, and ANYONE is capable of stabbing you in the back - even your so-called "friends."
I am currently in the market for a new original project to pursue, preferably going in a different direction and branching out into some new areas I haven't previously ventured. The past year has seen, in my opinion, a major influx of new and talented rock bands that are carrying on the torch and advancing the classic melodic songwriting style I grew up on into more contemporary territory...such bands as Nickelback, Trapt, Hinder, Daughtry, Shinedown and Rev Theory have really caught my ear lately and have me desiring a shifting of gears and the need for a slight re-invention. It's funny, because from talking to people I'm finding that the same people who still love Journey, Bon Jovi and Def Leppard are all listening to the above bands, so it appears to be following in a very seamless thread and carrying on a style that fortunately was not totally killed off by grunge, hip-hop and rap. (those are three styles of "music" you will NEVER hear me dabble in!)
I'm very excited about what the future may hold as I already have a number of offers and projects I am considering, and I look forward to sharing that news when it reaches fruition. Until then, anyone seeking a reliable drummer and experienced songwriter/lyricist please hit me up here and I'll be talkin' to you !
Over'n out...
