Learning ethnic dance, listening to music, supporting the arts, reading mystery novels, shopping, and cooking.
Television
Ghost Whisperer (love that there's a show with a supportive husband and wife team), Psych (just goofy fun), So You Think You Can Dance (LOVE that show!), Heros, CSI... WOW, I watch too much TV!
Heroes
Tanya (impressive drive and direction in life), Dorothy (bucking tradition whenever possible and looking fabulous while doing it), Indira (strength for others), Anne (there's always enough time for others), Norma (the importance of strong family bonds), Ellie (what not to do in life, but also showed me that you can survive even if you make all the wrong choices).
About me:
I started taking bellydance classes to help me reduce my stress level. I was looking for a dance or movement class, and a coworker spotted a flyer for belly dance at his gym. I signed right up and in addition to finding a way to manage my stress, I discovered an enveloping passion that has provided a multitude of other benefits. To name a few... new friends, exposure to new cultures, better self esteem, and (unfortunately) an unreasonable desire for anything that glitters, shimmers, or sparkles.
I dance to connect with others.
I've met so many wonderful people and I've been lucky enough to form some really close friendships. No community is perfect, but I love belonging to a very supportive network of women.
I dance for the joy it brings me.
I dance because I get such pleasure from it. I've always loved music and dance. But of all the styles I've tried, nothing has captivated me like Raqs Sharqi. I think you can practically see a person's soul when they dance this dance. It has such depth and so much room for individuality.
I dance to help others.
I wanted to share all the benefits I've gained through dance, so I started teaching. I love seeing students doing a movement they thought they'd "never be able to do". To see them realize that their body actually does "move like that" after all. This dance empowers women and I love to be a part of that.
This dance is very important to me, and I want to do everything I can to raise awareness and respect for this dance as an art form, and a source of empowerment and healing for women.
