My desire is to live life as though heaven begins for me tomorrow...sing like no one is listening...dance like no one is watching...and love as though I've never been hurt! Challenging at times? HECK YEAH, but why waste another breath?!!!
I grew up on a small farm located in the tiny town of Hayden, Alabama. Don’t blink as your driving through….you’ll miss it! Not only was my childhood full of adventure; it was also full of hard work and, an expectation of excellence from my parents. I milked a cow every morning and evening during my young teen years. Others chores included feeding the pigs, cows and chickens, gathering eggs and working in the gardens and fields. My father planted 3 acres of peas each spring that my brothers and I worked, harvested and took to the farmer’s market. The money made from the sale of produce was used to buy our school clothes. You may wonder if there was time for anything other than work with a list of chores like that. However, there was plenty of time for play….we worked hard and we played hard. Riding horses and dirt bikes, camping, building forts in the woods, fishing off the bank of our pond for bream and catfish, and water skiing in the summer-time are just a few of the fun activities I enjoyed as a child and young adult. I would not trade the experience of growing up on a farm for “all the tea in China,” as my father would say!
I began playing the piano at the age of 9 and started singing in small country churches at the age of 11. When I was a child, the churches in and around my hometown had day and night revival services, as well as “singing schools.” My brother and I and two neighborhood friends formed a quartet and became quite popular in the area, especially with the older crowd. YIKES...now I'm part of the crowd I thought was so old at the time! As a young adult and until recently, my singing moved from local churches, choirs and praise teams to churches and community venues around the southeast singing my own material as well as popular tunes. I’ve also had the honor of singing the National Anthem in Atlanta for a large national company meeting. What a rush!
Even though I love to sing and still do perform on occasion, I've made the decision to follow my heart. I will pen and put to music the words of my imagination, dreams, heartache and happiness. Some time has passed since I last used these skills; however, it's a journey I am excited about. Songwriting 101 here I come!
