I am in the band The Tiny Tin Hearts. The members are Seth Osborn (Writing, vocals, keyboard and banjo), Sean Ziegler (guitar and steel guitar), Melanie Martinez (electric bass). Jesse Poole (drums), Dan Eversole (violin), Jim Korioth (cello), Jenni Wieland (french horn and trumpet) and myself on trombone. You can listen to the band's music on this page by selecting their play list on the drop down menu.
Influences
My influences include in the rock idiom such bands as Chicago and Blood Sweat and Tears especially James Pankow of Chicago. I have admired those artists that could successfully play classical and jazz such as Wynton Marsalis. I have been influenced by the classical trombonist Per Brevig. I love such diverse classical composers as Paul Hindemith, Aaron Copeland and Charles Ives. I love big jazz bands including The Count Basie Orchestra, The Stan Kenton Orchestra, The Buddy Rich Big Band, Dave Holland's Big Band and Bob Florence's Los Angeles All Stars. Lastly, I have been influenced by the sacred trumpet player Phil Driscoll.
Sounds Like
I work to immulate a number artrists such as James Pankow of the band Chicago, Bill Waltrous and JJ Johnson in Jazz and Dr. Neil Humfeld in classical music.
My home town is Dallas, Texas. I went to Justin F. Kimball in Dallas which is also the same high school as Stevie Ray Vaughn and the character actor Stephen Tobolowsky. I was in the band, orchestra and jazz band. It was a rich learning environment and was grateful for the broad musical experiences. I graduated in 1971.
I then attended Dallas Baptist University on music scholarship. I was in the wind ensemble, brass quintet and the jazz band. I studied trombone with Dr. Douglas Smith who later became the director of sacred instrumental studies at Southern Seminary in Louisville, KY. The fine arts department was chaired by the composer and musician Don Gillis. My jazz instructor was Steve Bayless. A highlight was the year the wind ensemble played for the National Baptist Convention in Mexico, City. Another highlight was the brass quintet playing at the Glorietta, NM Baptist Encampment on the same program as Cynthia Clawson. Lastly, I had the pleasure of being conducted by Aaron Copeland when he came to Dallas Baptist for a lecture. He conducted the Dallas Baptist wind ensemble on his band transcription of "Variations on a Shaker Melody." During my junior and senior years I was the principal trombone for the Irving Symphony orchestra. I was a studio musician for a number of sacred recordings for the Word label. I also played regularly for churches and sacred music conferences.
After I graduated from Dallas Baptist University I became the middle school band director at Reed Middle School in Duncanville, Texas. I was the director at Reed Middle school for five years. I was hired by Bill Philips. I was then the assistant band director at Duncanville, H.S. under Tom Shine for four years where I also directed the Lab Band. There were many highlights including the numerous UIL Sweepstakes, The Parade of Champions Marching Contest and Duncanville H.S. being in the in the first Class 5A UIL marching band competition. Another highlight was the the Duncanville H.S. band marching and at the Battersea Park Easter Parade in London, England and playing other concerts around England and Wales. Lastly it was my pleasure to have the lab band recorded on the commemorative album for the Cedar Valley College recording technology program. I taught in Duncanville from 1975 to 1984.
During that time I also completed a Masters Degree in Education from The University of North Texas. I studied trombone under Leon Brown and conducting under Anshel Brusilow. I played in the summer symphonic band and the Six O'clock Jazz band.
I made a career change in 1984 and went back to graduate school. I completed the Master of Professional Accounting degree in 1988 from The University of Texas at Arlington. I became a CPA in 1989 and have worked in accounting for over over 20 years. I am currently a senior financial consultant for Dell in Round Rock, TX. Music has always been a large part of my life and a constant. While living in Roswell, NM I played and conducted the Roswell Community band and also played in a jazz band called the "Nacho Average Jazz Band." While living in Denver, Co. I played in the brass ensemble and performed sacred solos at Smoky Hill United Methodist church. My current projects include The Austin Symphonic Band, the Austin Chamber Music Center and the Indie rock band The Tiny Tin Hearts. I have also done freelance recording for bands in the Austin area. On occasion I perform sacred solos at Bethany United Methodist Church in Austin, TX. I am active in the music community in other ways. I am currently on the board and treasurer for The Austin Chamber Music Center. I also perform in the adult academy of The Austin Chamber Music Center. I am available for gigs, sacred solo performance and free lance recording.
