I love everything! Tony Rice, J.D. Crowe & The New South, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Blue Highway, Alan Jackson, Tori Amos, Bela Fleck, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Sting, Elvis, Del McCoury, Patty Loveless, Classical Music, Dolly Parton, Van Halen, Journey, Hank Williams, all kinds of hip-hop. I love a broad range of music. Some of my favorite artists you may or may not have heard of: Rose Cousins, Stacy Donahue, Lisa Shaffer, Susan Werner, Stacy Dumas - just to name a few. I love Steve Bonafel's "Easy Come, Not So Easy Go," & Randy Browning's "Rodeo Clown."

Progressive, contemporary bluegrass & acoustic music. Tony Rice loves Donna's piano playing, and has encouraged her to involve it more, causing her music to spread across more genres.

Chris...you rock!
Donna's new album is being produced by J.D. Crowe. Her last album, called "Gaining Wisdom," was produced by Tony Rice.
Donna Hughes writes all her own songs. She was discovered by Tony Rice for her writing talents, when a copy of Donna's 2003 self-released album made it's way into the hands of the guitar legend. Tony convinced the largest independent label in the world, Rounder Records, to sign Donna, and Tony produced her first Rounder release.
At about the same time that was happening for Donna as an artist, Barry Bales, bass player for Alison Krauss heard one of her songs on a radio station, and called to see if she had any material. Alison Krauss & Union Station recorded Donna's "My Poor Old Heart," for their Grammy-winning "Lonely Runs Both Ways" album, and the group also performed the song at the CMA Awards in 2005.
Donna has performed at some of the finest venues, like B.B. King's in Times Square/NYC, Eddie's Attic/The Variety Playhouse & the Red Light Cafe' in Atlanta, Merlefest, The Birchmere in D.C., The Station Inn/The Bluebird Cafe'/The Radio Cafe' & the French Quarter in Nashville, Orange Peel in Asheville, Handlebar in Greenville, Cat's Cradle in Carrboro, Gettysburg Bluegrass Festival, Eastern Music Festival in Greensboro, Bear Trap Music Festival in Wyoming, Ossippee Bluegrass Festival in Maine, Dollywood, and many more and many other great clubs/coffee houses/ wine shops & festivals across the country.
Donna also wrote "Sad Old Train," which was recorded by the Seldom Scene, featuring awesome vocals by Lou Reid, on their new album "Scenechronized." Donna wrote 9 of the 15 songs on her 1st self-produced/self-released album, "Somewhere In Time," and an amazing 21 songs on her 2003 "Same Old Me" release. She composed 12 of the 14 tracks on the her Rounder release, "Gaining Wisdom," produced by Tony Rice.
She is working now on a new album, produced by the legendary banjo and master performer, J.D. Crowe.

"In whatever musical context she chooses, Donna has the potential to go as far as she wants. The idea of producing this album intrigued me, because Donna is unique enough as a writer and performer to establish herself as a distinctive voice both within today’s bluegrass scene and beyond it. I truly believe this album is going to amaze everybody, regardless what category or genre they want to fit it into. As we were recording, I remember telling her, 'This album will be your calling card, and will open doors for you that you cannot imagine.' I believed that then, and as I listen to her new album, I believe it more than ever. Donna is very personable with her tunes – she writes from the soul. As a performer, she has many avenues to choose from." ~Tony Rice
