The ADKINS CHITI: WOMEN IN MUSIC FOUNDATION, non-for-profit and international, has been working to promote women as composers and creative musicians, in all fields, all parts of the world and in every century since 1978 !! The Foundation produces festivals, concerts, undertakes research, publishes books and participates in University training courses.
Since 1982 the Adkins Chiti: Donne in Musica Foundation (known world wide simply as DONNE IN MUSICA) has a special interest in women in jazz. We run a greatly successful and ongoing festival in Frascati (near Rome) – “ControCanto – Donne in Jazz” - in which jazzwomen from all over the world come to perform their own music and where some have even produced cds from their live performances.
The library of scores and cds and the data banks and archives of DONNE IN MUSICA are protected by the Italian State Archive System, and contain over 32.000 scores of music by women. DONNE IN MUSICA is recognised as a Cultural Institute by the Latium Region, has the patronage of the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, is a partner project with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Internal Affairs, Ministry of Equal Opportunities, and is also a member of the International Music Council of UNESCO and the European Music Council.
Famous worldwide for its advocacy and empowerment of women in music, the Foundation together with the members of its International Honour Committee (comprising Associations, women composers and creators of every kind of music and musicologists), together with a network of musicians (men and women) in 116 countries, provides visibility, safeguards and sustains research regarding women’s musical activity in the past, encourages the creation of new works and the musical and cultural diversity of women today.
The President of the Foundation, Patricia Adkins Chiti, internationally famous mezzo-soprano and musicologist, was for many years a member of the Italian State Commission for Equal Opportunities. Guest speaker and lecturer for universities and cultural organisations in different parts of the world, she is universally recognised as one of the prime-movers in the ongoing work to promote and defend women as composers and creative musicians. The term “women in music” came into use in the English speaking world after the first festival for “Donne in Musica” in Rome in 1979/80.
