About me: Dono, Inc. is a family organization in residence at NationHouse/Sankofa Fie, an African-centered school. Dono was formed for the provision and transmission of traditional West African expressions of drum, dance, and song. Dono’s mission is to perpetuate these traditional forms and to facilitate a firm understanding and appreciation for the traditions among youth and adults.
Dono has been providing traditional edutainment opportunities to local and national communities for nearly a decade. Dono began the summer of 1994 as a summer camp for youth, out of which evolved a professional drum ensemble. The drummers who formed the ensemble were Kweku Akoto, Mahiri Fadjimba Keita, Diallo Sumbry, Malik Hooks, Kofi Akoto, Osei Akoto, and Amadou Kouyate. Soon a dance component of the ensemble was formed via the incorporation of the talents and expertise of Nkenge Cunningham, Akua Allrich, Fofie Akoto, and later, Bintou Kouyate, Asemoa Akoto, and Akosua Akoto. The organization has thus become Dono Drum and Dance Ensemble.
During the fall of 1996, Dono began offering community dance classes at NationHouse/Sankofa Fie in northwest DC. Out of these classes emerged the Dono Community Drum and Dance Ensemble, a performing company comprised of community members ages three and up. Dono community classes also served as the basis for workshops in drum and dance from throughout the African diaspora.
Dono continues to actively seek knowledge and understanding of traditional African forms of drum, dance, song, and language. Each member of Dono humbly and eagerly accepts their charge to maintain these traditions and to pass them on to future generations in their most authentic form.
