Don's Interests
|
| General | Nature photography, Flyfishing, Hiking, Biking, Long range rifle competition (F Class) | | Music | NORAH JONES!!! I can always find something by Norah that fits my mood. Southern Rock/Blues fusion (for lack of a better term) - Blackfoot, Gov't Mule, Allman Brothers, Marshall Tucker Band, Little Feat, Rossington-Collins Band, Wide Spread Panic, Foghat, etc. Favorite songs are "Heart Of Mine" by Norah Jones or Leslie West, "Highway Song" by Blackfoot, "Whippin Post" and "You Don't Love Me Anymore" by The Allman Brothers, and by Gov't Mule -"Brighter Days", "Hammer and Nails", "Beautifully Broken" & "I Confess". They all hit close to home.
Also into Cracker, R.E.M., Counting Crows, Barenaked Ladies, Train, Third Eye Blind, Jewel, Sheryl Crow
About the only music I can't listen to is Hip Hop/RAP.
| | Movies | Monty Python & the Holy Grail is an all time favorite. Classic B&W film noir - Bogart & Bacall, "This Gun For Hire" Anything with James Gagney or Eward G. Robinson. Not really movies per se, but the Ken Burns films on PBS: "The Civil War" and "Mark Twain" | | Television | Don't watch much, trying to wean myself from it. Am somewhat addicted to "Lost" & "24". Other than that the news/weather in the morning, some Discovery Channel and public TV | | Books | "Alas Babylon" by Pat Frank, "God's Children" by Harold Coyle.
"Voyage Of Discovery" by Stephen Ambrose.
Plan to read the 3 volume "A History of Britain" by Simon Schama( a gift from my Daughter) & bios of Theodore Roosevelt and James Madison. I like most history texts as I have a history minor. I love books in general, but am easily bored which often results in my being in various stages of reading several books at once. | | Heroes | Randall Shugart and Gary Gordon - 2 US Army Delta snipers who willingly gave their lives to save a downed helicopter pilot in Mogdishu. You can read about it in "Black Hawk Down". "Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends." - John 15:13. "Where do we find men like these?" - Me.------------------------------------------------------------------
Bushido was not originally a written code. It was passed from father to son and refined on the battlefield or in individual combat.
Just like it is today among American Warriors. It is nothing more than the old Team Sergeant teaching "Don't be late; Don't be light; Don't be last" to the cherry on the Team. It is nothing more than Yeager yelling, "Get back in the fight!" It is nothing more than Chief Rogers writing an article about "not peeking around the fucking corner" or Scott Reitz cautioning against speed at the expense of accuracy.
It is nothing more than professionalism and honor in the profession of arms. And we have it in abundance today. Examples abound. For example, history records no greater deed in battle, not the Spartans at Thermopylae, not the Paratroopers' stand in the Ardennes, not the 47 ronin, than the actions of Master Sergeant Gary I. Gordon and Sergeant First Class Randall D. Shughart on 3 Oct 93. And there will be more coming out of the recent conflicts. Stories like those of PO1 Neil Roberts, SFC Paul Smith and and First Sergeant Brad Kasal.
No, we don't need a 100 year-old book by an academic to teach us about Warriors or The Code. We raise our own just fine right here in the USA. I'll stack ours up against anybody's, anytime, anyplace, by any measure.

Who I'd like to meet:
I'm not much impressed by fame and/or notarity and I don't understand those who are. Had a Sociology Prof. who once remarked that a snob isn't the one with fame/noterity. The snob is the one who knows the one with fame/noterity and won't let you forget it.
Maybe I can think of some one later.
