About me: A surprising number of people seem unaware of the boycott of The Sun by supporters of Liverpool Football Club. Some don't seem to know it is boycotted, others don't know why. Some people rather disturbingly know why the boycott exists but still choose to buy it.
The boycott of The Sun goes back to April 1989. At the time of writing that is almost 17 years ago. On April 15th 1989 a disaster took place which resulted in the deaths of ninety-six Liverpool supporters at Hillsborough, the home ground of Sheffield Wednesday, during an FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest. Ninety-six people had their lives crushed out of them. Many more are said to have ended their own lives since as a consequence of that disaster. A lot of injustices came out of that disaster, far too many to list here. For more information visit the Hillsborough Justice Campaign website at http://www.contrast.org/hillsborough and please try to support them.
This article concentrates on one piece of injustice that could so easily have been avoided. That could so easily have been made a little better, if not fixed, in the intervening years. Lies were printed as fact in a British newspaper, and that newspaper has still not made an unconditional apology for what it printed. Its editor of the time has never made an unconditional apology in all of that time
The headlines and sub-headlines on the front page of The Sun newspaper on the Wednesday following the disaster were as follows:
“The Truth.
Some fans picked pockets of victims
Some fans urinated on the brave cops
Some fans beat up PC giving kiss of life.”
So just four days after their loved ones had died, four days after they had narrowly escaped death themselves, Liverpool supporters were confronted with those headlines. People actually believed those headlines. Those who were there did not believe the headlines of course, nor did those who knew people who had been there. Unfortunately though a lot of people did believe those headlines; people who were not Liverpool supporters, perhaps supporters of another team or people who did not follow football at all. The headlines sewed seeds in so many people’s minds that the 96 supporters died at the hands of their own kind. All lies, all proven to be lies, yet never put right by that publication.

Coca-Cola claimed they were backing England, whilst Mars told the English to "believe," exploiting passion for the sport to shift more calorie-crammed teeth-rotting products to a nation known for its hideous "British smiles." Neither company is British-based; Mars being based in McLean, VA, and Coke in Atlanta, GA. The fans bought the products anyway, perceiving such purchases as part of the support of England, proving the ploy worked. Buoyed by this belief, the fans were shocked when England scraped through every game, barely even beating the underdogs Trinidad & Tobago, which most of us English can't even point out on a map, even though it belonged to our imperialistic Empire until 1962. The few football commodities South America and Africa had were bought to benefit the English clubs and their billionaire American or Russian owners; the England team had been damaged by the fact its major league, the Premiership, had become (to use tabloid terms here) flooded with waves of foreigners who stood on a glass ceiling keeping down the home-grown talent in lower divisions (you're only as good as the game you play, after all). I don't know if you know or not but in the states we have a radio show and podcast called World Soccer Daily, one of the hosts is a total tosser named Steven Cohen. He's been going on and on about how the Reds get special treatment due to their "history" in such matters and how any other team would be punished over the "Free Michael Shields" campaign that was displayed prior to the West Ham match at Anfield. Really harping on it. I'm boycotting the show and any other Yanks who love our club might want to do the same. Jokes and all that about hubcaps are one thing, but this is too much.
Everytime i put on the TV i see that knob Kelvin McKenzie. He was on BBC twice saying how he thought Russel brand was out of order and had no morals. This is coming from bloke who printed lie after lie about Liverpool fans. The bloke is a scumbag. i have written to the BBC asking why they keep using him. He was on radio 4 the other day as well (young people may not know what that is).
Just to let you know other people arond the country still stick to the ban and always will. There is no forgiving for what they printed. Neil(Boro fan)
