"...We are not Death/Grind that focuses on speed, satanism and brutality; we are matured listeners who have grown beyond these adolescent themes. On the other side of the spectrum, we are not Goths; we don't wallow in our self pity and consider it a bad day when we feel joy. We are Doom... sophisticated, mature and feed from our emotions. Doom encompasses all that we hold dear; we tell the tales of great literature, thrive in fine art and imagery and reach out to others who can relate to the emotions we feel and channel through music. We are the Doomed... Music that is powerful and sympathetic to the heart, yet retains our willingness to fight back. Doom is a driving force for all our feelings and expressions, which makes it the most versatile and essential of all musical forms."

*** A short history of Doom Metal ***
To find the origins of Doom Metal, you have to go back to the late 60's and early 70s. The earliest
I guess you can go back to is Pink Floyd. Not that they were Doom by any means. A big part of Doom
is the riffs. Black Sabbath and Blue Cheer and Pentagram are noted as the earliest to utilize heavy distorted riffs, along
with Led Zeppilin and a bunch of other more obscure bands from the time. But all these bands shared a common interest in mid
60's blues rock bands, namely Cream. To This day, Sunshine of Your Love by Cream is the earliest truly heavy riff I have
been able to locate. Sunshine of Your Love I myself credit for heavy metal, and a sound basis for what doom metal would come
to be. ***Another big part is feedback and distortion, and Pink Floyd is of course the pioneers
of feedback experimentation. One may consider them as the original Drone/Heavy Ambience act. Your best
example of this will be to watch Live in Pompeii.***
And as i said before, Cream influenced a whole generation of heavy blues rock including Jimi Hendrix,
Blue Cheer, Black Sabbath, and a small army of other amazing bands from the underground of the early
70's. Black Sabbath of course is credited as being the first true heavy metal band. Truly ahead of their
time, with shear power and downtuned riffage and rumbling bassline, wartime drums, Black Sabbath was certainly ahead of the
pack. The mid 70's saw many of these hard rock groups change direction, or simply call it quits. Luckily there was a whole
new breed of bands that were more than willing to carry on the torch. This would be the true beginnings of Heavy Metal.
Pentagram who started in 1971, would see Randy Palmer join in 73 for a short time. During
this time, the band would record under the name Bedomon (crossbreed between the suggestions Behemoth and Demon).
Pentegram would soon break up only to reform with a new lineup at the end of the 70's. Another formation would
follow with the formation of Deathrow, as well as a change in style to meet the modern sound of heavy metal.
Pentagram is best known for being fore fathers of doom.
1975 would see the first album from motorhead, which tightly confirmed heavy metal as a genre. It was on
Christmas of 1975 that Iron Maiden was formed. Their original sound was very reminisent of the original recordings
of Pentegram. In 1978, Pagan Alter formed out of the NWOBHM. One of the few new wave bands that would adopt Sabbaths
style and create true occult doom. In 1977, Scott "Wino" Weinrich would form The Obsessed (originally Warhorse). The
lineup stayed together until Wino was recruited for vocal duties in Saint Vitus in 1986. This would last until The Obsessed
start up again in 1990. 1979 would see the previously mentioned Saint Vitus (originally known as Tyrant) make its
entrance into the metal scene. 1979 also saw the formation of Trouble taking Sabbaths sound for their own.
1979 once again is the birth year to a very important band for doom metal, with Witchfinder General coming out of
England with their own take on Sabbaths sound. Coming out of the NWOBHM, Witchfinder General became another forefather
of doom. And of course Paul Chain who was the guitarist of Death SS would make important music for the genre with both
Death SS and his solo work starting as early as 1977. With all these mentions, its interesting to see that doom metal didnt
see its official debut until 82-85 as most these bands released their debut albums during these years (including Pentagrams
first full length album after 15 years).
With doom starting to make a name for itself, a host of doom bands surfaced. Candlemass emerged out of Sweden to take
hold of what would be known as epic doom in 1985 and would release Epicus, Doomicus, Metalicus in 1986. In 1987, Count
Raven of Sweden would come out with a more traditional sound of doom, utilizing Sabbaths sound. Messiah of Confusion
remains as one of the most important doom albums of all time. In America, Solitude Aeturnus would come to be in 1987,
cementing themselves as kings of american epic doom. A notable mention to the beginings of modern doom metal is The Melvins.
Not that they are doom metal by nature, but their influence in the genre is unmistakable. Originally a punk rock group in
the vein of Black Flag, their sound changed after the addition of Dale Crover to a more slow brooding sound that has
influenced and instigated genres such as drone and sludge metal.
1989 Would see doom metal make set itself firm as a genre in the underground seeing bands sprout up everywhere, with
one shining diamond in the rough. Cathedral in 1990 would release one of the most seminal records in doom metal history,
Forrest of Equilibrium. The album painted bleakness and sorrow with undertones of beauty with painfully slow downtuned
riffs and an almost gutteral vocal provided by ex front man of Napalm Death (see the first Napalm Death album Scum)
They would later settle on a more progressive stoner metal sound but their influence remains strong upon the scene.
***Other bands important to the beginnings of the modern doom scene from this era include Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride,
Winter, Asbestosdeath (Later to be known as Sleep), Crowbar, Eyehategod, and many more great bands.***
Since then, doom metal has been growing bigger in the underground. Its influence is felt in many styles of music.
For a good example of this, you can listen to side two of "My War" by Black Flag and hear the major Vitus influence.
The worlds most famous "Gothic Metal" band Type O Negative is extremely reminiscent of traditional doom metal, if not
classified as doom altogether. And the suprising popularity of Southern Lord records to which you can find records from
the label in most record stores ***Southern Lord is the label that released Dave Grohl's metal monster Probot, which features
many important doom metal figures such as Wino (the Obsessed, Saint Vitus, Spirit Caravan, The Hidden Hand, Shrinebuilder),
Lee Dorrian (Cathedral, Napalm Death and Teeth of Lions Rule the Divine) and Eric Wagner (Trouble).***
The scene is rather diverse in the interpretation of doom metal among the bands and the amount of bands continue to grow.
There are many doom bands that have crossed the line into the major label deals. Cathedral signed a major deal that only
lasted one record, and the Obsessed saw the same chance. Kyuss from the stoner metal genre achieved success. Down definately
has its place in the stoner doom catagory, with tracks very reminiscent of The Obsessed. If you count Type O Negative as a
doom band, then the mark has been set in stone. And with the influence being found in many different genres in metal, one
thing is for sure; Doom metal is here to stay- Derek Edward Kellington.

My new 3 album box set ODESSA delves into the disgusting involvement the United States government had in hiding Nazi war criminals that were deemed, "intelligence assets", to be used against the Russians. ODESSA also examines the enthusiastic role the Franciscan Order, Argentinian and Chilean Governments, and Arab leaders who hated the Jews played in hiding and finding new homes for former fascists. It seems many nations had a reason to keep these monsters from being captured, and this is my attempt to expose the establishment of a Fourth Reich in South America that still exists to this day.
