For just shy of a decade Doom Ribbons was the experimental solo project of James Owen, known for his drum feedback loops, percussion, and the apocalypse. In 2007, opening up for Acid Mothers Temple at a show in Asheville, North Carolina, Doom Ribbons premiered as a duo, with the addition of Shane Perlowin on guitar. Some Ashevillians may remember a similar incarnation called Tigers in The Sack, which performed as duo, trio, and quartet around Asheville, circa 2002-03. Whereas this earlier collaboration presented entirely improvised sets of music, Doom Ribbons music is now primarily composed, using loops, vocals, percussion, feedback, and lyrical guitar melody to create an ominous experience inspired by our own mortality and the sublime.
Doom Ribbons is currently working on a record...which hopes to be done summer '08...
Glancing up from my 4/20 stupor, i see the falling Ribbons, streaming downward towards me. The gentle, gliding path reminds me of waterfalls as they curve around rocks made of air in a frictionless stance......
These are some words inspired by the sounds and music from my guest last week, "Doom Ribbons." Their methodical, chaotic build-up of energy, emotion and mood is a journey like no other.
Exploring the darker recesses of one's consciousness, mortality and awareness can often be a draining and frightening experience-- if attainable at all.
Doom Ribbons makes this journey for you, and helps guide you on a seemingly directionless path, only to pull you back from th brink with a better understanding of self in the One.
A very Special Thank-you to "Doom Ribbons," who shared the space with the Roast Kings, AND came back to my house after the show for an intimate performance of new material.
Thanks for your sharing your expression and art with me and my audience on a wonderful 4/20.
