Influences
the guy walking down the street, talking to himself, laughing at a knocked over garbage can
** the woman on the train, nervously darting her eyes back and around the car, paranoid
** the baby, silent, looking up at the sky while being pushed around by a nanny, a * * grandmother, her mother perhaps
** the hobo, sitting at the bar, telling the same story from six years ago, old beard, tattered
**the secretary, happy work is done, ready to drink, ready to pout and twist a fist at the moon
**the CEO, cheerful, insane and lonely, anxious and demonic
**the unicorn, innocent and free; curious and bright every step she takes is another star being born in this wonderful swole' universe
St. Christopher & the Sleeping Doormen officially formed in the Summer of 1994 in New York City. Christopher Gordon (lead singer/guitar) began writing songs in 1992, but didn't collaborate/play with anyone officially until '94. Originally playing under the loosely, short-lived name, "Kill Oprah," in early/mid '94, drummer Sam Koppelman and Gordon played crazy, mind altering crazi-tunes any chance they got. Gordon met Sean Lennon through Sam--and the three made nuttier musc! It was at Sean's studio Gordon and Koppelman first rehearsed and recorded. Later, Gordon met a dashing young fella named, Timo Ellis. The two recorded avant-garde, underground hip-hop and punk. Timo, Sam and Sean all still play today and get 3 X silly.
In the Summer of '96, high schoolmates Nick Zarin-Ackerman (lead guitar) and Dan (Lonehawk) Lubell (bass/keyboard) recorded several tracks with Gordon for the first and only St. Christopher album, "Boring Secrets" (released on a small indie label, Sooj). Timo and Sam also appear on this recording and most of it was recorded at Sean's studio in lower Manhattan. Though Lubell and Ackerman played quite a bit with Gordon, the band started playing out as a two-piece with just Gordon and Koppelman. In time, the Sleeping Doormen saw many changes and different players, the idea of "the sleeping doormen" translates to "anyone could play at any given time." Nino Pinelli played at shows as well, often on bass and guitar. David Mueller appears on "Boring Secrets," playing bass and Jordan Galland has played a show here and there as a Doorman!
From CBGBs to the Knitting Factory, Piano's to Tribeca to Southpaw--this prolific band refused to keep their set the same; their sound changed as well over time. The club, Brownie's, served as home to both 86 Noodles and St. Christopher & the Sleeping Doormen for years--until it shut down and re-opened as a bar with a mega-jukebox.
The solid lineup today includes Lubell's smooth & hot keyboard stylings and sweet backup vocals, Nathan Kloke's hot & freaky soloing; and Gordon's hotty, hearty lyrics and melodies. Alex Stimmel (St. Felix Station) is crazy flavors on the bass, and Aaron Nixon, New Zealand's finest, is nasty on the kit.
All songs featured here, and more, are available on CD ($13.00) or Cassette ($7.00). I accept PayPal--satisfaction--no question!!! Drop a line if interested (please specify hip=hop or rock or both).

FZ: Ok? Now if you still want to get your name in magazines he wants five hundred dollars a month! JCB: Where does it come from? We worked one gig this month. And now, so, what do we get, two hundred dollars for this gig up here, if we're lucky. If we're lucky, we'll get two hundred. And it'll be two weeks before we get it. Probably. I mean a- . . . after all, uh . . . what is all this shit in the, uh, in the newspaper? We sh-, if we got such a big name, how come, uh . . . we're. . . FZ: That shit in the news . . . JCB: We're starving, man! This fucking band is starving! And we've been starving for three years. I realize it takes a long time, but God damn does it take another five, ten years from now? FZ: There's some months when you're not gonna work as much as other months. There's some months when you're gonna make a lot of money, and if you average it out, you do make more than two hundred dollars a month. JCB: Expenses are sure high, too. If we'd all been living in California, it would've been different. FZ: If we'd all been living in California, we wouldn't work at all! JCB: Ah that's -- true . . . Well, we're not working n-now anyway! We worked one gig this month, Frank! What's wrong with getting two months in a row of this good money? Or three months in a row? Then we can afford to take three or four months off and everybody can . . . After the first month I can get just enough ahead, but if I had two more months, man, I'll get ahead. 'Cause I'm not living very extravagantly, I'll tell you for sure . . .
