Biography
The Dope Poet Society is one of the most consistent and compelling groups ever to emerge from Toronto 's Hip Hop scene. Their music is characterized by intelligent lyrics set to innovative head-nodding beats. Professor D is the ultimate MC; able to grab the microphone anywhere and rock any crowd over any beat. He spits from a seemingly unlimited arsenal of lyrics, or simply freestyles with finesse on any given topic. Meanwhile, DJ Spinister spins, cuts, scratches, produces and mixes self-produced bangers, classics and current hits.
This is the way Hip Hop is meant to be.
Tours
The Dope Poet Society regularly performs across Canada and internationally. In 2005 the group toured North, Central and South America as well as West Africa . Plans are currently in the works to tour throughout South Africa , Europe and Asia.
Media
The group has garnered airplay on radio stations around the world. Performances and interviews have appeared on NBC, CNN, BET, CTV, MuchMusic (international), MuchVibe, City TV, TVO, as well as overseas on Cuban National Television and Antenne 2 (France, worldwide), Channel O (South Africa, continent wide), and GBC (Ghana, national), among others.
Support
The Dope Poet Society has toured, performed and/or recorded with De La Soul, Dead Prez, Brand Nubian, Wyclef Jean, Smiff'n'Weson, Jeru The Damaja, CL Smooth, Special Ed, Boot Camp Click, and Public Enemy. Often, the industry's ‘up and comers' are first recognized by the established artists in their field, and are predicted to be ‘the next big thing.' Artists such as Tupac and Jay-Z were favourites among artists before the public or record companies knew who they were. Chuck D, one of the first people to recognize Tupac's talent, has rated The Dope Poet Society as the number one independent group in the world. The average North American may not yet have heard of The Dope Poet Society, but ask Wyclef Jean, Dead Prez or Maestro, what they think of The Dope Poet Society, and you'll get rave reviews.
