Doreen Edith Dominy Vlachopoulos Valiente (b. 4 January, 1922 in Mitcham, South London, England - d. 1 September, 1999 in Brighton, England) was a member of an early Wicca coven, led by Gerald Gardner. Born Doreen Dominy, the daughter of Christian parents, the young Doreen was convinced from an early age that she possessed the power to use magic. Valiente was the name of Doreen's second husband, whom she married in 1944.
Shortly after Gardner made public his claims to have been initiated into a surviving witch cult, he was joined by Valiente in 1952, who collaborated with him in the creation of rituals. Valiente became Gardner's High Priestess in 1953 and wrote a number of poems for the use of Wiccans, including a rewritten version of Charge of the Goddess and also helped formulate the Wiccan Rede (Guiley p348). However Gardner's increasing desire for publicity caused conflict with Valiente. When she attempted to control him he suddenly produced the Wiccan Laws in 1957 which she could not accept, breaking from Gardner to create her own coven and eventually joining Robert Cochrane's coven after Gardner's death (Valiente 1989).
In the '70s she published a series of books and gradually became one of the most well respected and influential leaders of Wicca meriting an entry in the Dictionary of National Biography. She was active in her promotion of modern witchcraft and neo-paganism, being particularly keen to emphasise that the movement was not related to Satanism, but did not seek publicity for its own sake. She was a notable figure in supporting the development of the Pagan Federation. Faced with challenges from sceptics Valiente attempted, with some success, to provide evidence for Gardner's claims concerning his initiation, notably by identifying Dorothy Clutterbuck in 1980, the old witch who was supposed to have performed Gardner's initiation, in an essay published in Eight Sabbats for Witches by Janet and Stewart Farrar.
Dr Leo Ruickbie examines her life and contribution to Wicca in his Witchcraft Out of the Shadows. According to Dr Ruickbie, Valiente was the 'Mother of Modern Witchcraft', playing a crucial role in re-writing much of Gardner's original ritual material, an assessment supported by Ronald Hutton.

Kurze Zeit nach der Aufhebung des Hexereigesetzes 1952 (England) erfuhr sie durch einen Artikel von Cecile Williamson, dass es noch einen funktionierenden Coven gab, den New Forest Coven. Cecile Williamson, die im Museum für Hexerei auf der Isle of Man arbeitete, bekam daraufhin einen Brief von Valiente und leitete den Brief weiter an Gerald Gardner. Kurz danach lernte sie Gardner kennen. Im Jahr 1953 wurde sie dann in den Coven von Gardner initiiert. Kurze Zeit danach war sie seine Hohepriesterin des New Forest Coven.
Im Jahr 1957 kam es zum Bruch zwischen Gardner und ihr. Sie befürchtete, dass Gardner durch die vermehrte Öffentlichkeitsarbeit den Coven gefährdete. Sie verließ mit einigen Mitgliedern den New Forest Coven und gründete mit Ned Grove einen neuen Coven. Valiente wurde dann in den Clan of Tubal-Cain eingeführt, der von Robert Cochrane geleitet wurde. Cochrane, der als Erbhexe gilt, hatte die 1743-Tradition gegründet. Doch sie verließ den Coven, als sie bemerkte, dass Cochrane sich mehr für Hexensalben interessierte und geringschätzig über gardnerianische Hexen sprach.
Als ihr Mann im Jahr 1972 starb, widmete sich Valiente verstärkt dem Schreiben, ebenso dem Hexentum, weil ein Mitglied des britischen Parlaments versucht hatte, ein erneutes Gesetz gegen Hexerei durchzusetzen, welches eine moderne Hexenverfolgung auslösen konnte. 1980 machte Valiente sich auf die Suche nach Dorothy "Old Dorothy" Clutterbuck, derjenigen Hohepriesterin, die angeblich Gardner initiiert hatte, um zu beweisen, dass diese umstrittene Frau überhaupt existiert. Eine Studie von Ronald Huton ergab aber, dass Gardner diesen Namen benutzte, um die wahre Hohepriesterin zu decken. Im Jahr 1999 starb Doreen Valiente an verschiedenen Krankheiten, darunter Krebs, im Alter von 77 Jahren.
Doreen Valiente gilt bis heute für viele als die Mutter des modernen Heidentums. Sie schrieb viele der heute noch gebräuchlichen Wicca-Rituale. Sie war darin so talentiert, dass Gardner öfters zu ihr kam und von ihr verlangte, noch am gleichen Tag ein Ritual für ein bestimmtes Thema auszuarbeiten.
Valiente entdeckte auch von Aleister Crowley übernommene Passagen in Gardners Buch der Schatten. Gardner erklärte, dass die ihm übermittelten Überlieferungen nur bruchstückhaft gewesen seien und er diese Lücken versucht hätte, auszufüllen; aber wenn sie meinte, sie könnte es besser, dann sollte sie es tun. Valiente nahm ihn beim Wort und änderte viele von Crowleys Passagen und fügte einige von Charles Godfrey Leland stammende Passagen hinzu. Das letztendlich fertiggestellte Buch der Schatten wurde dann die Basis für das Gardnerianische Wicca.
