About me:

Hello all you Starbuckaroos out there! This is DaVido, you know, the JavaJitter guy. Wow, we finally finished "The Official Starbucks Rejection Tour Video". It’s been one of the kookiest experiences of my life, and I've met some really great people.

Because Starbucks, their employees, and their customers, had no idea that we were filming in their stores, I'd like to take this opportunity to say thank you to everyone who appeared in our video. You guys were great and I hope you enjoy the video as much as we enjoyed making it.

Thanks to the Starbucks Corp. and their record label, Hear Music, for rejecting my song JavaJitter. It turned out to be the sweetest rejection I've ever had. If not for their rejection, this video would never have taken place.

I also like to say a special thanks to the wonderful policemen, firemen, the detective who followed us around (you know who you are), the security guards, traffic cops, and all the other local officials that we encountered during the filming. Remember when I told you guys that one day you would understand why we were filming this? Well, I hope you understand now!

Mama always said, "No matter how fierce the storm, the sun always shines through in the end!" Kids, listen to Your Moms, they’re always right. My quest is simple; I just want Starbucks to put my song JavaJitter on their cd racks with the rest of their music!

Some people say it's an impossible dream, others call it DaVido and Goliath, and some even say I'm like Rocky, only my script is real. I may be fighting one of the toughest opponents of all time, and I may get knocked down along the way, but I believe with your support, I will be ”The People's Champion”! An Impossible Dream? To Me, It's "The American Dream"...

I kept a journal of some of the events that took place during the JavaJitter experience. Although very few have seen my journal, I’d like to share it with you. Enjoy, and I hope to see you at Starbucks soon!

I went to Starbucks and had my usual Latte. My favorite Starbucks barista was working that day. Although she doesn't know it, I secretly call her "my little Starbucks Queen". (I love their coffee, but she's the cream).

11:45 a.m. She took a break and was drinking her usual, a triple espresso, when suddenly she looked at me, smiled and said, "every time I have one of those drinks, I just want to do the JavaJitter all night long!" I said to myself "Java Jitter”? I don't know what the JavaJitter is, but I hope she does it with me, LOL!

5:45 a.m.

I keep on thinking about my little Starbucks Queen doing the Java jitter all night long, when suddenly it hit me--why don't I write a song called JavaJitter? Maybe it could be a new dance, you know like the Macarena, the Hustle, the Twist, etc. Hmmm, maybe JavaJitter could even be a new Starbucks drink.

6:30 a.m.

The words started flowing, well, like Starbucks coffee. From the opening line, "Sitting at Starbucks enjoying a latte, when an angel walked by, what a hottie”, I knew I had something good.

7:29 a.m.

I called my writing partner John, woke him up, and started singing what I had for JavaJitter over the phone. After he yelled at me for waking him up, he said let's get together tonight, and finish it. He loved the idea!

8:30 p.m.

I got together with John and he helped me finish the song that night.

I went to Starbucks and read the lyric to Starbucks Queen--she absolutely loved it, and gave me a latté on the house. Could this be love?

10:30 p.m.

Me and my band "The Flip-Outs" got together, and recorded JavaJitter at Stevie D's studio. We only used real instruments, no synthesizers. The track had a cool vintage vibe to it. I invited Starbucks Queen to the studio (only as a friend, wink, wink). As soon as she heard the song, she started dancing! Maybe it is love...

March 31, 2006
1:00 p.m.

I took the song to that Grammy award-winning arranger/producer Tony Camillo. He did the coolest horn arrangement. The song turned out to be a combination of swing and rock, "Swock".

John called me up all excited and told me he played JavaJitter for a big record promoter named Jerry Lembo. He said Jerry loved the song and wants to meet with me. He also said Jerry knows the head honcho at Starbucks Corp., Ken Lombard, (ironically, I happen to be a fan of Mr. Lombard's from his basketball playing days) and Jerry is going to set up an appointment to let Mr. Lombard personally hear JavaJitter. Wow, things are looking up!

11:45 a.m.

I went to Jerry's office, a smart man with an extreme sense of musical knowledge. He gave me some great suggestions like, “it would be cool if you had a video on YOUTUBE". He was genuinely impressed with JavaJitter and really seemed to dig my vibe. He said he is going to be meeting with Ken Lombard in a couple of days, and expects Starbucks to jump onboard. Excuse the pun Mr. Lembo, but your words are music to my ears.

Jerry Lembo called and said he had a successful meeting with Ken Lombard. Mr. Lombard liked the direction of the song and my vibe so much that he suggested that we FedEx JavaJitter directly to Tim Ziegler at Hear Music. (Hear Music is Starbucks’ record label.) I can't believe it, my dream is coming true! Just imagine, me, getting signed to a great company like Starbucks! Below is a copy of the actual letter Mr. Lembo sent to Tim Ziegler of Hear Music.

Dear Tim Ziegler,
”Sitting at Starbucks enjoying a latte.”

At the suggestion of Ken Lombard, I have enclosed a copy of a new single “Java Jitter,” written and produced by DaVido (the artist).

In addition to potential radio airplay, we are currently auditioning choreographers to create the “Java Jitter” dance. Our intent is to produce a video and initiate an internet viral campaign.

We hope Starbucks will become a promotion and marketing partner in this project.
Some of the ideas we would like to discuss with you are:

1.Selling the single at Starbucks stores
2.Selling the single as a digital download at Starbucks.com
3.Filming the video at Starbucks stores (featuring employees and customers)
4.Having DaVido make personal appearances at select Starbucks stores nationwide
5.Donating a portion of the profits from the sale of “Java Jitter” to the Starbucks Foundation

Think Buster Poindexter’s hip, fun version of “Hot, Hot, Hot.” Then think about the most popular party dances: Electric Slide, Hustle, YMCA, Conga, Cotton-Eyed Joe, and Macarena. Now envision Starbucks customer’s worldwide singing and dancing to “Java Jitter.” We hope you share our enthusiasm and anxiously await the opportunity to explore cross marketing and promotion possibilities.

Best regards, Jerry Lembo President/CEO (Creative Entertainment Officer)

12:30 a.m.

It has been quite a while since I heard anything about JavaJitter. I wonder if they listened to my song yet. I told Starbucks Queen we haven't heard any word yet. She said, “no news is good news". No matter what happens, I'll never stop believing in JavaJitter.

1:45 p.m.

Finally, there was a message on my phone from John, he said, "DaVido, sorry man, but Jerry Lembo just called and told me he got word from Starbucks and they passed on JavaJitter. Unfortunately, Starbucks does not want any coffee theme songs, and they do not sign unknown artists". I was so upset by John's message that I had to call Jerry Lembo myself and hear it from his own lips.

1:59 p.m.

I called Mr. Lembo and asked him what happened. He said Starbucks passed on JavaJitter and there was nothing he could do about it. I asked if he was still interested in working with me in spite of Starbucks, and he said he will also have to pass on me as well. He said his plate was full and he was banking on Starbucks signing me for him to continue. I was really disappointed because I thought Mr. Lembo and I would be working together. It’s really hard for me to write anymore tonight, I feel like somebody punched me in my gut.

I can't sleep. I keep thinking about Starbucks rejecting me. It's not like I haven't been rejected before, but this one cuts a little deeper! Perhaps because everyone really believed that Starbucks would have signed me and that JavaJitter would be the next big thing. I've to do something, I can't give up now! Hey, maybe I can go to Dunkin’ Donuts, "Sitting at Dunkin’s enjoying a Latte”… Dunkin’ Donuts might be the company that accepts me, LOL!

11:30 a.m.

I haven't written in awhile. I guess I've been a little down lately. I decided to bite the bullet and go to Starbucks. Besides, I haven't seen Starbucks Queen in a while. I kind of miss her. I walked in the store, looked at her, and I knew--this was the moment of truth. Even though we were only friends, today is the day I will officially ask her on a date.

11:45 a.m.

We started talking and I knew something good was brewing, LOL. Suddenly I said to her, "would you like to go on a date with me?” Then I said, “We can go get a coffee". She looked at me and said "coffee?" I know, I know, I was nervous, LOL! She said she would go out with me under one condition, that I sing JavaJitter in front of everyone in the store. That girl’s crazy and I love it!

11:49 a.m.

Without hesitation, I stood up in the middle of Starbucks and started singing JavaJitter. She was laughing hysterically while videotaping me on her camera phone. What started out as a little fun, turned out to be one big fiasco!

11:52 a.m.

The manager came running from the back screaming, “You cannot sing in Starbucks”, he told Starbucks Queen to stop filming. He was way over the top. Then he said he'll call the police if I don't leave. That's all I needed to hear. It was like one of those light bulb moments. I just knew by the manager's reaction that if someone videotaped me singing JavaJitter in Starbucks, and it was on the Internet, maybe then Starbucks would notice me.

June 29, 2006
9:30 p.m.

I called up my friend, Q, who is a great video editor/director, and told him about my idea, and at first, he could not stop laughing. After he stopped laughing, he immediately said, “dude, we can get in trouble” and then without hesitation, he said, “dude I love it, let's do it!”

June 30, 2006
3:45 p.m.

I was so excited, I called Mr. Lembo. When I told him my idea, there was a long uncomfortable pause, and then he said, he wants nothing to do with it, nor does he want his name associated with any filming I do at Starbucks. He also said he has a good reputation and that my idea sounds, and I quote "weird". I was a little taken back by Mr. Lembo's reaction; I thought he would dig the idea! After all, he was the one who suggested I do a video. Fortunately, his reaction gave me even more motivation.

July 3, 2006
11:30 a.m.

Today was one of the most exciting days ever! I was videotaped singing JavaJitter in over 12 Starbuck's stores, and I knew this would only be the beginning. We brought in a large boom box, and I wore my custom-made silk blue tuxedo, with all the trimmings. Customers and employees alike were singing and dancing. But, in almost every store they called the police; they called 911; they called the fire department; they screamed at us; they banned us from their stores. The response was overwhelmingly bizarre, and it’s all on tape. Today "The Official Starbucks Rejection Tour Video" was conceived.

Well people, it has been one year, and what a year it has been. Since July 3, 2006, I performed JavaJitter in over 200 Starbucks stores and counting! We’ve shot enough footage to do a movie. We developed quite an underground following. There were times when 40 or 50 people showed up singing and dancing. On several shoots, we had a tour bus taking me and my entourage to different Starbucks. We made the Fox Five News and CNBC filmed us as well.

We have our own website www.JavaJitter.com where there's a petition for people to sign to get my song on the Starbucks’ racks. I still love Starbucks and I do enjoy their latté. And, I believe "The Starbucks Rejection Tour Video" will be one of the most viewed videos on the Internet!

A memo to Jerry Lembo: Mr. Lembo I'm proud to announce that we did accomplish mostly everything you proposed in the letter to Tim Ziegler of Hear Music. Thank you, sir, for your suggestions! And, now for our accomplishments:
  • I did get a top choreographer and created the new dance “JavaJitter".
  • I did film our video at popular Starbucks in the Metropolitan area.
  • I did feature employees and customers in our video.
  • I did make personal appearances at selected Starbucks.
  • JavaJitter is now available as a digital download, only on “iTunes”.
  • The JavaJitter video is now playing on the Internet.
  • I did donate a portion of the proceeds of my song JavaJitter to the Starbucks charity, "The Starbucks Foundation", and will continue to do so. . .

I'd like to thank my right hand woman, assistant and good friend Mary Alice, my PR chick Barbara B, my editor/co-director The Q, thanks Q for your heart, soul and all the hours, Nestor, bodyguard Cliff-Ton, Cadillac Joe, Aunt Fran, Mark, Stanley, Howard, Profit for busting a rhyme in the Starbucks parking lot, Jerry Lembo, Ken Lombard, Tim Ziegler, John Hynes, Bob Riley, my hairstylist Amber, my pinky ring cleaner and manicurist Tasha, Bob at Zero Point Promotions, The Orchard, The Flip-Outs, all our cameramen, Andre, Osata; Bobby Memphis, and the underground followers who came to Starbucks and hung with us!

I'd especially like to thank you Mom, the greatest woman on Earth and beyond, Big Nick, I love you dad, my brothers Jeff and Phil, my sweet sister Leslie who always loved my music, Godson Jeffrey, my boy Ire, family friend Pat Elizabeth Taylor Woods, and of course, "My little Starbucks Queen". You’re the greatest family a guy could ask for! Without you, none of this would have happened! I do believe in miracles, and I know this will be one of them! Enjoy my video, sign my petition, and don't forget to ask for JavaJitter at a Starbucks near you!

    With Love,
