Double Feature Records presents Soft-Core, the first US release by
My Robot Friend.
My Robot Friend is a musical and performance art project born from the ashes of the late '90s NYC band Princess. My Robot Friend performs in an elaborate light-up suit while interacting with illuminated objects, wireless video cameras and pyrotechnics. Think lovechild of a three way between Devo, Laurie Anderson....and a robot.
"Soft-Core" is actually My Robot Friend's third album, and anyone that spent any time at Luxx or exploring the electroclash scene probably recognizes that robot suit.
Double Feature Records is a new label started by Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips. Dean Wareham formed seminal indie bands Galaxie 500 and LUNA. Britta Phillips played bass in Luna for the final 5 years. Dean & Britta's first album, L'Avventura, was produced by Tony Visconti ) and recently re-leased with bonus tracks on Double Feature Records.
The Sand Pebbles
Long described as one of Australia’s best kept musical secrets, The Sand Pebbles blow their cover and take it international on Dean Wareham’s (Galaxie 500/Luna/Dean&Britta) New York label, Double Feature with the release of A Thousand Wild Flowers - a compilation of highlights of the past five years.
Mojo magazine lauded its snaking guitar lines, sand blasted snarl and folk-drone comedowns. The Times hears Byrds-like cascades and Television in an echo chamber.
In other news, Dean & Britta will be in Melbourne for the International Arts Festival in October playing their Andy Warhol 13 Most Beautiful Shows at the Malthouse.
A Thousand Wild Flowers is a compilation of the best songs from three extremely rare albums by the
Sand Pebbles. They describe their sound as flower punk -- equal parts Buffalo Springfield and Wire.
We have been fans and friends ever since we heard them. I (Dean) contributed guitar to one of their albums, and the Pebbles did a great remix for our Variations EP last year. These guys have an unusual pedigree for a rock band --- they met, as scriptwriters, on the set of the Australian soap opera Neighbours. After long days of scriptwriting, they would occasionally spend evenings jamming in an empty Tae-Kwon-Do studio, before graduating to a chill-out room at raves. I am not making this up. Cheval Sombre, the self-titled debut by Cheval Sombre, is
delicate, druggy, slowcore folk produced by Sonic Boom, with musical contributions from Britta and Dean. This CD contains tracks from Cheval Sombre's out-of-print 7” singles (issued on the UK label, Static Caravan, and a whole lot more.

Cheval Sombre is reclusive New York-based poet and musician Christopher Porpora and this debut album follows a series of rare as hens’ teeth seven-inches that slowly, subtly introduced his talents. Here, Popora’s low-key acoustic ditties (10 of them, plus a cover of The Doors’ “Hyacinth House”) are taken by former Spacemen 3 man Sonic Boom and sprinkled with effects fairy dust, while his label bosses, former Luna duo Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips, add luminescent guitar and keyboard drones.
