Bio
Described as 'two shots of Travis with a Haggard chaser", Texas-born singer/songwriter Doug Bruce now resides in Bendigo, Australia. With his band, The Tailgaters, he has been impressing die-hard country fans and new converts alike with his rich voice and natural affinity for the southern country sound. Doug was awarded 2009 Best Male Vocalist in the well regarded Tamworth Independent Artists Recognition Awards (TIARAs) and again in 2012. Doug also took out Best Contemporary Song (for I Know About Lonesome) in the Professional section of the Tamworth Songwriters' Association (TSA) National Songwriting Competition. He was also a top five finalist in the Traditional section (for Just Three Minutes). Doug was also a finalist in all six of his nominated categories of the prestigious Victorian & National Country Music Awards in 2009, taking out Victorian Male Vocalist, Victorian Album of the Year and the Smoky Dawson Best Independent Release (for the album, All I Need) in the National section The album reaped significant praise in the country music and mainstream press. Described as producing 'a fabulous album' and 'quite exceptional', Doug has been described as having "a simply awesome talent to wring emotion from words and music" (Deborah Minter, Capital News, December 2008) and one who has "embraced the toe-tapping Australian beats to complement his smoky, Deep South voice" (Sarah Warne, Sunday Herald Sun, February 8, 2009). The first single, and title track, released from the album, "All I Need" was in the Australian Hot Country Top 50 for 15 weeks, reaching number 20. A music video for his second single, What I'm Drinkin' About, was released in May 2009 to the Australian Country Music Channel and available worldwide on YouTube (www.youtube.com/watch?v=xqyju1io814). The song was 9 weeks on the top twenty of the Kix Country Top 20 Countdown (Australia) – 7 weeks at top ten, and is still rising in the European Country Music Association radio airplay charts (including number 1 in Ireland and Austria). Just Three Minutes is the third single released to radio (Hillcrest 50 and NFS 135) and has reached No.4 in Europe. A second video and fourth song to radio, I Know About Lonesome, has just been released and is currently in the Kix Country Top 20 countdown. Doug's new album "A Good Place" was released in late 2010 and has also delivered him a swag of awards and nominations. Doug netted 7 nominations in the 2011 Victorian and National Country Music Awards, taking out Victorian Album of the Year, Victorian Male Vocalist of the Year and Best Traditional song. First release from the album, the duet "Close Enough" reached #13 on the Australian Country Music radio airplay chart "Honky Tonk Shoes" a real live crowd pleaser at Doug's shows was 3 weeks at #2 on the charts and the video clip was 12 weeks in the Country Music Channel's Countdown. "Coffey Road" was #1 on the national country music radio Top 30 and reached #13 on CMC. the 4th release, "Sweet" was 2 weeks at #2 and 14 weeks in the Top 30 radio chart, and 14 weeks in CMC Top 50 countdown. Doug's third studio album, Made That Way, has just been released, with the title track already charting! Doug Bruce and The Tailgaters have been playing pubs, clubs, festivals and B&S Balls around Australia and have been gathering loyal fans with each appearance. The band performed several shows in the USA in 2009 and did so again in June 2011. Doug was also invited to perform in Norway August 2010 following his recent chart successes in the European Country Music Charts. The Tailgaters were handpicked after several years of scouting for local musicians with a passion and natural feel for the true country sound. Born in Aubrey, Texas, Doug moved to Bendigo five years ago with his Australian wife and their young son. Whilst a relative newcomer to front of stage, Doug's music career began almost 20 years ago, performing primarily as a drummer and backing vocalist for numerous bands in Texas. He also spent time in Nashville performing and doing studio session work as a drummer and backing vocalist. This afforded him many amazing opportunities, with highlights including live performances and radio broadcasts on The Grand Ole Opry with Grammy nominated singer songwriter and 2008 European CMA Male Vocalist, Billy Yates.
