My first concert experience was Sly & The Family Stone at The Sacramento Memorial Auditorium in 1969. Santana opened.I was 8 and I knew at that moment what I was going to do with my life.I was fortunate to grow up in a household where be-bop and swing were always being played. Bird, Monk, Diz, Ellington, Miller etc.Plus all of the great vocalist Gloria Lynne, Lambert, Hendricks, Ross, Bavand, Hi-los, Dinah Washington and many more. Plus the great soul jazz combos of the 50's and the 60's.The 3 Sounds ( my Dad's favroite ) Ramsey Lewis trio, Junior Mance and Ahmad Jamal. At the same time, I was listening to my sister's generation during the Motown explosion and my generation had the Jackson Five. Great time to be a kid listening to AM Radio. Then of course the funk came to town and everything changed. Some of my favroite songs are: Theme in search of a movie: Eddie Harris, Misty: Groove Holmes, Stella by Starlight: Gloria Lynne, Shiny Stockings: Lambert, Hendricks & Bavan,Mama he treats your daughter Mean: Ruth Brown, Much Better Off: The Miracles. The albums that had a profound influence on me are: Gloria Lynne: Live At the Las Vegas Thunderbird, Lambert, Hendricks & Bavan: Live at the Basin Street East, Gloria Lynne: I'm Glad There Is You, Weather Report: Heavy Weather, Jimmy Smith: The Cat, Julian Adderly: Presenting Cannonball, Sly & The Family Stone: Stand, Riot Goin On, Dance to the Music, Santana: Abraxas, Bob Dylan: Desire, New Birth: New Day, Isaac Hayes: Shaft, The Beatles: Revolver, Sgt.Pepper, Help, Rubber Soul, White Album, Please Please Me, Black Ivory: Don't Turn Around, Baby won't you change your mind , Joni Mitchell: Hissing of Summer Lawns, For the Roses, Court & Spark, Yes: Yesterdays,Close to the Edge,Yes Album,Fragile, Going for the One, Paul Simon:Paul Simon, Rufus: Rufusized,Crown Heights Affair: Do it your way, Parliament: Mothership Connection, James Brown: Black Caesar,Kiss: Alive, Alive 2,UK:UK ,Stanley Clarke: School Days, AWB: Soul Searching,Led Zeppelin:Led Zeppelin, Houses of the Holy, Physical Graffiti, Larry Coryell: Lion and the Ram,Splendid, Two for the road, Be Bop Deluxe: Axe Victim,Sunburst Finish, Drastic Plastic, Ted Nugent: Double Live Gonzo, Jimi Hendrix: Axis Bold as Love, Jaco Pastorius: Word of Mouth,Elvis Costello:Armed Forces, Get Happy,King of America, Rush: Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres, Kate Bush:The Dreaming, Hounds of Love,Sensual World, George Harrison: All Things Must Pass, 33 1/3, Stevie Wonder: Music of my Mind, Talking Book, Fullfillingness first Finale, Innervisions, Earth Wind & Fire: Head to the Sky,Open Our Eyes, Gratitude, John Lennon: Imagine, Plastic Ono Band, Paul McCartney: Ram,Band on the Run, Simon & Garfunkel: Bookends, Parsley Sage Rosemary & Tyme,Jackson Five: ABC, Third Album, Maybe Tomorrow,Ramsey Lewis Trio: Country meets the Blues and many more.In December of 75 I borrowed my neighbor's guitar and went over to my best friend's ( Jefferson Davis ) house and we hunkered down with the Mel Bay chord book in hopes of becoming the next Lennon/McCartney. In the 80's I played bass in a series of original groups and actually pounded the pavement in L.A. trying to get a developement deal and played gigs all over southern California. In the 90's I played bass for Sammie winner Mind Club, wrote ,arranged and produced pop group The Pharoahs, who were signed to Subgroove records and landed a international distributorship through MTS ( Tower Records ) and were distributed to Borders throughout California.
