"...cover band Dough Knees tips their musical cap to the memory of San Francisco's most Grateful son, Jerry Garcia." — Delfin Vigil, San Francisco Chronicle, 8/7/2008.
"A Grateful Dead tribute band comprised of accomplished veterans and young talents too young to have ever seen the Dead without their Deadhead parents. -- KGO Radio
"One of the Bay's most esteemed Dead cover bands. Their ability to recreate the sounds of the Grateful Dead is uncanny...just wait for the first three notes of Shakedown Street and you'll feel like you're at Winterland in '78." -- Cafe du Nord
"Grateful Dead tribute bands are a dime a dozen,
rarely capturing any of the Dead's actual appeal or virtuosic jamming, but
the locals in Dough Knees actually do the legacy proud. What became a
one-off tribute last year among self-professed Deadheads has grown into a
primary concern, and for good reason: instead of trying to attempt
note-for-note re-enactments, Dough Knees evoke the spirit of the Dead
through limber jams potent enough to give even the sober a contact high." — santacruz.com
"Santa Cruz's premier Grateful Dead cover band." — Metro Santa Cruz, 8/27/08
"true-to-form" — Good Times, Santa Cruz
"... one of the Bay Area's best new Grateful Dead cover bands." 7x7.com
"The authenticity's in the sound for this local band that plays the music of the Grateful Dead. Scott Cooper, Theo Winston, Steve Sofranko, Roger Slideman and Justin Christensen cover songs from across the Dead's spectrum with extended jams and a sense of spontaneity that ensures every show offers something different."-- Santa Cruz Sentinel, Best Bets, 8/29/08
Dough Knees is a Grateful Dead cover band comprised of veterans of the Bay Area jam band scene. Founded in the fall of 2007, Dough Knees has quickly developed a buzz and has become an in-demand band at clubs, festivals and parties ... anywhere Deadheads gather to celebrate the music of Jerry Garcia and company. Unlike some "tribute" band who dress the part and take it to creepy obsessive levels, Dough Knees simply plays the music as the Dead would have, which is to say it will be different every night but it will always sound like the Dead. The band doesn't try to mimic Bob Weir's gestures or grow their hair and beard to look like Garcia, but they do try to sound like the Dead ... and do an amazing job of it. Dough Knee's choice of material spans the Dead's entire career including vintage gems such as "Casey Jones" as well as latter day nuggets including "So Many Roads." Guitarist Theo Winston uncannily channels the soloing and tone of Garcia, while rhythm guitarist Scott Cooper deciphers the unique style of Bob Weir. Lastly drummer Michael Owens single-handedly mans the post, a la the early 70s when Bill Kreutzman was the lone drummer.
Members of the band have performed, recorded or studied with Barry Sless (Phil & Friends, David Nelson), Ben Ellman (Galactic), Melvin Seals (Jerry Garcia Band), Steve Kimock, Mike Gordon (Phish), Ike Willis (Frank Zappa), T Lavitz (Dixie Dregs/Jazz is Dead), Bill Laymon (New Riders), Keith Graves (Jefferson Starship, Quicksilver), Dale Ockerman (Doobie Brothers, Quicksilver), Kai Eckhardt (Garaj Mahal, John McLaughlin Trio), George Marsh (David Grisman Quintet), Bobby Black (Hank Williams, Bob Dylan), Luka Frederickson (Wolfman Washington), Mike Schermer (Elvin Bishop, Maria Muldaur), Marc Carino (Fabulous Thunderbirds), James "Fingers" Shupe (Dan Hicks), Chris Cain, Robert Lowery, Luther Tucker, Johnny Shines, Rusty Zinn, Matt Hartle, Deep Blue Sea, Stackabones, Butch Zito, Jim Brighton, Gary Gates, Bundy Brown, Shady Groove, Workingman's Ed, Slugs & Roses, Bhi Bhiman, Zyg, Burnt Toast, Noodle, Hippie Grenade, and many others.

MyHotCommentsI'm not sure what part got cut off. I was hoping you'd add me so you could be a part of my world.....and you've done that... I mentioned that I was friends with the group called Jerry's Kids...from the Bay Area. They are not together anymore and I have missed them terribly. So when I saw your add that you'd be playing at Moe's Alley in Santa Cruz, I checked you guys out and became an instant fan!! You for sure have that crazy wonderful sound that only the Dead can create. I'm planning on coming to the show on the 31st which features Tab Benoit. He's been a friend of mine for like 15 years and I can't wait to see him. Unfortunately, I can't make your show this time, but now that I have your schedule, I'll keep checking it and hope to come see a show. Do you stay in the Bay Area? There's people that would love you here in the Central Valley. Think about it and if there is anything I can do to help, I've got some connections. Thanks for the music...Melissa
