Doug's Blurbs |
About me:
Iam an almost 42-year-old writer, former editor and teacher.
I'm also trying to be a publisher of self-help books. Utopia Books: Better People Creating a Better World.
Yes, I write fiction. Specifically, I write science fiction and satire. I specialize in dystopia, time travel, and alternate history.
I attended the Radcliffe Publishing Course at Harvard, the Clarion Science Fiction Writers' Workshop at Michigan State (where I won the Douglas L. Ruble Science Fiction Scholarship), and the Viable Paradise Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Workshop. And after reading Steven Pressfield's War of Art, I attended the Story Seminar. Last year, I also attended the Writers of the Future Workshop in Pasedena California.
My teachers have included Nalo Hopkinson, Kelly Link, Richard Paul Russo, both of the Nielsen Haydens, James Patrick Kelly, Tim Powers, KD Wentworth, Scott Edelman, Howard Waldrop, Maureen McHugh, Jim McDonald, Laura Mixon, and Stephen Gould (the SF writer, not the scientist).
I am published.
My work so far has been published (or soon will be) in Interzone, Writers of the Future[WOTF], The Door, AlienSkin, the Swamp, Fictitious Force, the Urban Bizarre, and Amityville House of Pancakes.
For a complete bibliography, check out my current wikipedia entry.
My first book, "You're Not Very Important: Twelve Steps away from Self-Esteem and Toward a Better World" was published in 2005 by Creative Guy Publishing. I was interviewed by McClean's news magazine on "extreme self help" that same year.
I'm also a beginning direct mail copy writer. My niche is writing for non-profits. I aspire one day to corner this market.
I'm also an academic. I am still completing a Ph.D. in English from the University of Minnesota. My specialties are utopian fiction, American Literature (all of it), the literature of social justice, and rhetoric.
I've taught courses on all the above. I'm currently teaching at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis Community and Technical College, and the University of St. Thomas.
As an academic, I've been published in the following venues: Utopian Studies, , Extrapolation and Foundation.
