Sounds Like
Catchy, very catchy. But interesting as well. We try to employ interesting rhythms, harmonies, and melodies into our songs. Sometimes what you hear is a well-composed or well-arranged song from start to finish. Sometimes what you hear is a jam, or an improvised piece - it just starts and finishes as it pleases, or as the moment or situation calls for, or as the band has prepared for it to do. Delight, Blues Focus, or Cool Jazz Standard, or whichever of the many names our band goes by provides a sound that is interesting and edgy and appeals to the artistic, creative, emotional, even political palate that the listener is going for that night or that afternoon. We appease when we please, and we want to provide something interesting for you to hear - something you can enjoy at the moment, but also something that you will remember beyond that moment - something that will remain in your head upon which you can reflect later. That's what we mean by catchy.
David Mesirow, of stage name Doug Mezz, is a world-class painist, vocalist, lyricist, and composer. He is also a writer, thinker, theorist, mathematician, painter, humorist, hobbyist, and poet. In addition to the piano, he has also played the guitar, harmonica, drums, bass, xylophone, recorder, viola, and various percussion instruments.
David works within a group of musicians, Delight, who specialize in both songwriting, instrumentation, and improvisation. Their recordings and performances are combinations of these arts. In terms of overall sound, style, and approach, Delight's musical genre could, in short, be categorized as a mixture of folk, rock, funk, and jazz, (highlighting both the substantive musicality and subjective feeling of these genres.)
Many of our songs are either classically composed - based on classical or popular music traditions that use tried and true compositional techniques influenced by the masters - or compositionally innovative, which try out new ideas and stretch the limits of convention as well as test the comfort zone of the ear. Our lyrics are poetic, yet innovative and thought-provoking; so our songs always tend to give the listener something interesting to listen to.
"Another Man's Shoes," one of the songs you can listen to above, tells the story of waking up as if you were "in another man's shoes". It asks you to imagine being a different person and how that might play out. The original idea for the song was conceived by Eric Weiler. It was also produced by Eric Weiler, and Doug Mezz sings on the track.
On the live stage, Delight's fusion of composition and improvisation comes to life in a new form. Jam bands have done it before, and it is a common practice in jazz, but our sound isn't jazz exactly. What we play draws more from many diverse musical traditions than from just one genre, so our music almost defies genres as a diverse fusion of musical styles. We really play a mix of pop, rock, jazz, funk, alternative, reggae, R&B, motown, gospel, world, punk, blues, soul, classical, acoustic, and folk. Everything really.
"New Russian Blues" features the three members of Delight: David Mesirow, Eric Weiler, and Noah Cahan. An elaboration on the earlier composition "Russian Blues," this particular instrumental tune seems to defy genres. "New Russian Blues," available for listening on the music player above, involves improvisation over a compositional idea. The track mixes jazz, blues, classical, and folk through its use of improvised ideas, song form, chord voicings, and cultural sound.
We are both instrumentalists and experimentalists with our music, not afraid to stretch, even dismiss common musical conventions and ideals. Delight's innovative and thought-provoking music is a means to an end and an end in itself. We believe the music is good and pure on its own from a musical standpoint, but we also think our music will send positive vibes to the public.
