    Doug's Interests
GeneralI write realistic novels for young adults, based on talking with kids and learning about their lives. FALLING is my newest book, just published this spring. Many young readers have read my last novel, THE REVEALERS, which is a realistic, suspenseful, sometimes even funny story of bullying and three kids who do something about it.

FALLING is a combination romance, sports and detective story that's about a ninth-grade boy and girl who, searching for meaning in their lives, find each other — at first in chat room, then in real life. The girl is a question-asker, and the boy, a basketball star who refuses to play any more, is hiding something. When I was writing the book, I thought of it as a "love story with danger." It deals with some of the very real dangers that I see young people in my community dealing with, often without a lot of power to really change the situation they're in. It's also a first-love story, and it gets pretty intense!

MusicI like a wide range of music, especially music that has good rhythm, strong or real feeling, and excellent words. I enjoy acoustic blues, R&B, soul, reggae, soca from Trinidad, Brazilian and West African music, some rock, some country, and a fair amount (though not all!) of jazz.

Some of the CDs I find I play the most:
What's Going On, by Marvin Gaye
Blood on the Tracks, Bob Dylan
Lucky, The Subdudes
Quanta Live, Gilberto Gil
Wakafrika, Manu Dibango
Mardis Gras Mambo, Cubanismo
Unplugged, Eric Clapton
Songbird, Eva Cassidy
In My African Dream: The Best of Johnny Clegg and Savuka
Paul Butterfield's Better Days
Yellow Moon & My Brother's Keeper, The Neville Brothers
1990, David Rudder
Come On Home, Boz Scaggs
Jazz in the Present Tense, Solsonics
Red Hot & Riot, the music of Fela Kuti
Playin' with My Friends: Tony Bennett Sings the Blues
Songs of Freedom, Bob Marley
TelevisionMy daily show is The Daily Show, with Jon Stewart. I live in New England and follow the Boston Red Sox, during the season, when they're on TV -- which is often!
BooksHere's a sampling of my favorite books and authors:

A Confederacy of Dunces, John Kennedy Toole (funniest book ever)
To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee (sorry if you had to read it in school ... I think it's the best American novel)
A Farewell to Arms, by Ernest Hemingway (Hemingway is a big part of my writer's life ... others of his I love: In Our Time, Islands in the Stream, The Complete Short Stories, and A Moveable Feast)
Kim, by Rudyard Kipling (my other favorite novel ever)
The comic novels of P.G. Wodehouse
The Buddhist writings of Thich Nhat Hanh
Joseph Campbell's writings on myth
Robert Johnson's writings on psychology & myth
story collections by Idries Shah
Nine Stories, by J.D. Salinger

Other writers for adults: William Saroyan, Graham Greene, Khaled Hosseini, James Thurber, E.B. White

Fiction writers for young adults: Louis Sachar, J.K. Rowling, Karen Hesse, Brock Cole, Katherine Paterson, M.E. Kerr, E.B. White

My favorite books when I was a young-adult reader: Johnny Tremain, by Esther Forbes; Animal Farm, by George Orwell; Stuart Little, by E.B. White; the Pogo comic collections, by Walt Kelly; The Human Comedy, by William Saroyan; Call of the Wild, by Jack London; The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer, by Mark Twain
HeroesMahatma Gandhi. Nelson Mandela. Bob Marley. Bob Dylan. Abraham Lincoln. E.B. White. Ernest Hemingway. Jackie Robinson. John Lennon. Paul Butterfield. Eric Clapton. Fela Kuti. Gautama Buddha.

Hey if you liked my TV show Wall Street Warriors, wait until you check out my new book An American Hedge Fund: How I Made $2 Million...blah blah blah Check it out and let me know what you think--it's no BS Get-Rich-Quick book, I just want to show everyone how fun and exciting the stock market can be, if you know what you’re doing. It’s being called “the modern-day Reminiscences of a Stock Operator" and me "Jim Cramer on Steroids" which is kinda scary, but I'll take it!

I really liked Falling, it was quite realistic. It was really cool, because I could picture the places where Katie and Matt were walking. And it made me dream of Stewarts, which is too funny. :)
