My mom because she taught and still teaches me how to be a woman. I am 19 and I don't have a child, I'm still a clean virgin. I'm still in a way innocent, but that is a nice price to pay. I've learned by her example how to be strong for others and myself. She gave me the things most daughters don't get from their mothers- a self-esteem and time. She has also been my friend. I can't ever forget the times we spend together when no one is around.
My niece (3 this year)because I didn't realize how responsible I could be until she was born. There was a love that I never knew could come from me that was unlocked when I first picked up her small newborn body, which was weird because she was squirming like a worm: I was afraid I would drop her lol.

About me: Lakenya was born on January 5, 1988 though her mother took birth control everyday. She was the youngest and known to her mother as an odd, quiet and well-behaved toddler who watched her oldest brother and mother create art. By the age of 5 she figured, “I could do that”.
So she drew people, animals, landscapes and many comic books of her own. Finding raw materials at home, she put together little dinosaurs (or what she only knew at the time as simple monsters) with twist ties used for garbage bags or appliance packages. And with line paper, toilet paper or aluminum foil, she made dolls to play with. Though she had Barbies and other baby dolls, she needed wrists, elbows and ankles to move like that of a real person. She also made the dolls simulate dancing, pregnancy and child-birth. It was something she couldn’t get from her manufactured toys unless she wanted to tattoo them, cut their mouths open or clip and color their hair.
In kindergarten, two of her works was good enough to display in the school’s office along with the fifth graders at request of the teacher. One was a free-hand drawing of Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer and a free-hand drawing of her father’s work boots.
By the age of 9 she went into her phase of drawing demonic monsters and tortured pictures for fun and for her addiction to detail. She also went into the phase of making better dolls by building detailed skeletons with pipe cleaners and placing a water and tissue paper mixture over it. On those dolls she would perform surgery and baby deliveries repeatedly.
In her middle school years, she began to look at her collection of Mardi Gras beads differently; she had already lost her first and only pet dog to a mysterious sickness more than a year before. So she twisted her first pet out of the beads: a cat that she made durable enough to carry around with her all the time. It even had a place to sleep at night. Later, however it was taken apart through curiosity. It was all for the pleasure of making her art function like they had real lives of their own.
After that, she twisted her first dog out of the same medium. That too would be cared for. It is important to note that she used no base to build on. Those animals and children were and are beaded all the way through.
After graduating middle school and before heading to high school, she wove more beads into her very first girl. Soon after, she made a baby the same way.
Later, she attended S.S. Murphy High where she took the first three levels of Art. During the first two, she was reminded of the basics that she had done all her life, and in the third she was simply given assignments and graded. In her senior year she took advanced placement studio art where she had to build her portfolio in a small amount of time. She was always the slowest performer but always got the work done the way she and the teacher liked it. She graduated 2006.
For the two years after graduation, Lakenya did not know where to begin with her life and had her hands full with being the full-time aunt to her niece putting her social life, education and career on the back burner. However she promised herself that the year 2008 was going to be her year to blossom. She gave herself six months. Her first art festival was in February of 2008 and two others followed the next couple of months. Finally in April, she participated in the Arts Alive Festival where she realized her art needed more attention and appreciation and explanation than she could give from under a tent.
In July she began to prepare for her very first solo showing of her artwork to display at the University of South Alabama library and gallery. Her work lived there until December 19, 2008.
