About me:

introducing bicycle by downtown betty... bicycle is clothing for active outdoor west-coasters with their finger on the pulse of real life fashion. This soft cotton & or bamboo/lycra line is a hybrid between street wear & yoga wear...mixing well with both or brilliant on their own, taking the wearer from the yoga studio, to the dinner party, to sunset on the beach. bicycle...for people on the go

Made here in Vancouver, there is a distinct west coast vibe to the bags. Dedicated to beach culture, Downtown Betty started with Skimboard Bags and has now evolved into Guitar Packs, Diaper Bags, Yoga Bags & Beach Wallets. This year is the first series of Downtown Betty’s Home Grown Fabrics(*). The images are photographed, collected & drawn, then exclusively silk screened onto water & abrasion resistant nylon.

SKIMBOARD BAGS $150...SEXY LINGERIE FOR YOUR WOOD ~ a side zip, padded backpack style w/ adjustable backpack straps & alternative carrying handles to carry by hand &/or shoulders fit through. It's perfect for biking, walking, especially w/ more than one board (fits @ least 2 111cm woodies) and for keeping the sand & wax from getting all over your car & your home. There's an inside zip stash pocket for your wax, keys & cash money.

GUITAR PACKS $100...PROTECT YOUR WOOD ~ super excited about these...dopest one I've seen, much like the Skimboard Bags, so I guess it's not shocking. They are padded with a side zipper meant to be slung over the shoulder with an adjustable strap for different body sizes. An inside zip stash pocket to keep your picks & keys & uh other stuff too!

DIAPER BAGS $120...THESE ARE NO FRILLY-LILLY PASTEL BAGS ~ aww so cute...no, they're not. These bags are for people who still have their dignity & style intact. Side mesh pockets, one for baby's bottle, one for mama's or papa's, an inside zip pocket so you can be sure your wallet & keys are safe, 2 slip pockets for non-baby related items you want to keep dry...fabric is all water resistant, phew. Bag comes with matching change pad.

YOGA BAGS $65...GO WITH THE FLOW - this is a no fuss sort of bag. The essentials only, no frivolity...this is yoga people. Room for a mat with a towel wrapped around it. Mesh velcro pocket for sweaty gear & a zip pocket for phone & keys. This is the same fabulous water & abrasion resistant fabric as the rest of Downtown Betty with full side zip, an adjustable over the shoulder strap & a mesh bottom for air drying your mat.

BEACH WALLETS $20...WASTE NOT, WANT NOT ~ the same wicked fabric (in fact it's the corners of your Skimboard Bags & the curves of your Guitar Packs) but pocket size. Keep your cards, cash & coins in an easy open zip wallet. Each zipper is embellished with a stylized zipper pull that will bring out the colour in your fabric's eyes. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ DOWNTOWN BETTY"S FABRICS:

SAFETEX SPECIAL- pale pink w/ black "SafeTex" ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Limited Edition...Downtown Betty creates unique time pieces reflecting current infatuations & long term love affairs without saturating the markets, streets or beaches with the same print over & over again. Downtown Betty prefers to be know for her fabric creations & selections; for the subtleties of the masculine in the feminine & the feminine in the masculine, over name brand recognition. It is the goal of Downtown Betty to make bags that last a lifetime in the heart of the owner, not as overflow to the landfill........TREAD LIGHTLY .. .. ..

Who I'd like to meet:

People who roll with the same lifestyle and attitude. Those that...Love and live life to the fullest ~ Respect the earth and love it's inhabitants ~ Travel the worlds beaches & make daily treks to our very own ~ Get better at being a kid each passing year...All the women who skate, skim, surf, ride & all the dads who teach their kids to do the same...see you out there!

The Downtown Betty Tribe

Summer 08
...I met Charmina in March 2008 on a rare but gloriously received early beach day in Vancouver on my favourite (and hers too!) beach, Wreck Beach. She was carrying 2 boards, one in each arm, a hat a summer dress. I thought "cool chic, Downtown Betty target market". As the day progressed I didn't see her sit down once, so I went out to meet her on the shore (where she always is) and I saw that she was wearing wet suit booties...fierce determination and dedication for sure. She has only been skimming since 2007, but she already shines on the shoreline. I knew she was a match for Downtown Betty and it's tribe. And incidentally she carries the last Red Dragon Skimboard Bag now.

3 things that make Charmina GREEN
1. Drive a fuel Efficient Car
2. Buy Products Locally
3. Now has as a facebook group called Living Oceans Together We Roar (she loves the ocean too!) http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=560860096#/group.php?gid=17257154262

Favourite Quote: "Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond our measure. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, talented, gorgeous, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? We were born to make manifest the glory of God within us. And as we let our light shine, we give other people the permission to do the same..." Marianne Williamson

Summer 07
…it seems the perfect match was right under my nose, which was good as the summer weather didn’t exactly pan out on weekends this year. That didn’t stop The Pepins from heading to the flat shores of Spanish Banks this summer, with a total of 4 skimboards. One for Jacob 13, one for Griffin, one for Olivia, both 8, but just because they’re twins doesn’t mean they share everything, & one for Sean & Skylar, who trade off riding with hanging with their youngest son Charlie 4, who’s convinced Olivia’s board is his.

Skimming isn’t the first board sport these guys were into. Sean started skateboarding when he was a kid, and so, ever since Jake was a baby he was around skateboards, and with the twins, I recall that as soon as they were walking, they also rode. Charlie is of course following in his older siblings footprints…or skate shoes as it were. In the winter, they ride too…snow boarding every Sunday with Dad. The rewards of having a family all into the same thing must be great… while Sean shows the kids the ropes, and I’m sure while they show him a move or two, Skylar takes Sunday mornings to herself for the most part, in which she catches up with herself. She manages to run a green household. In total the family contributes to lessening their footprint by using an energy smart light bulbs, washer & dryer, eco cleaners for dishes, laundry, general household cleaning, they don’t use plastic bags in the garbage, they just empty the pale straight into the bin, of course recycling all of their plastics, glass & paper.

All in all this is one amazing family who contribute a lot to a positive future, not just in numbers, but in talent, conscious living…so ya, they are definitely Downtown Betty style. And while this year they can get away with just the one No Strings Attached Skimboard Bag for all 4 of their boards, I am sure it won’t be long before Jacob is asking for the car and probably even before that, needing a Skimboard Bag of his own.

DOWNTOWN BETTY.......TREAD LIGHTLY.

So many people still don't understand Riverboarding. We do not use a boat to travel upstream at 30+ mph. Riverboarding is powered by a bungee system that slingshots you upstream. You use the river current to stretch the bungee. Once the bungee is done pulling, it releases from the board allowing you to do many boardsport tricks. Once your ride is done, float back downstream to the end of the bungee, hook the board to the bungee, stretch it and ride again. Surf all day long! I am still getting Emails asking how to hook the board to the boat.

Many of us are undergoing situations this year that promote stronger spiritual values, or a greater sense of compassion and caring for others, or a greater awareness of who we really are and what really matters. For me this is my year for inner growth.
I hope to see you at the beach!
