I was born on April 20, 1944 in Ford Town, a part of Sullivan County, near Kingsport, TN, to Leonard and Minnie Lawson. I have two brothers, James and Les, and one sister, Colleen.
As far back as I can remember, I loved the sound of music. Just about everyone listened to The Grand Ole Opry, and our family was no exception. Though I listened to all the stars on the Opry, the group that impressed me most was Bill Monroe and His Blue Grass Boys. His music was different, more intense. High lonesome is the term we used for it. I could hardly wait for Saturday nights to arrive so I could listen. I decided early on that I wanted to play that kind of music.
My father, mother, and sister all sang gospel music when I was young. They were members of trios and quartets that sang a cappella music in churches and at revivals, and such. No doubt, that was where I acquired my love of quartet music.
When I was 11 or 12 years old I expressed an interest in learning to play the mandolin, so my Father borrowed one from one of the members of their quartet, Willis Byrd so I could try. I mostly taught myself to play by listening to the radio, a few records, and watching the occasional TV show. I eventually returned that mandolin to Mr. Byrd, and years later, he gave it back to me at one of the first concerts Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver played in Sneedville, TN. I still have it.

JOEY COX
Joey Cox will be the newest member of Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, replacing Chris Warner who stepped in briefly when Terry Baucom left the band in March. Just 24 years old, Joey has already had a stellar bluegrass career. He has toured and recorded with both Lou Reid & Carolina and BlueRidge, and was working with Kenny & Amanda Smith when the call came in from Doyle.
CARL WHITE
I was born on March 10, 1980 in Richlands, VA. My parents are Alfred and Nancy White, and I have 2 sisters, Jeanette and Carol. I still live in Richlands today, though we lived for a few years in Bristol, VA.
Tasha, my wife, and I have been married for two years. Our anniversary is Feb. 12th. I have two daughters, Megan (4) and Haley (3). Megan loves pre-school, and Haley loves staying home with momshe says shes still a baby! My little girls both love to sing and are trying to play instruments!
My Mom and Dad sang full time Gospel music for 20 years, and retired from the road in 1992. I dont remember a time when music wasnt in our home. At 3, I started playing drums with them. All members of my family play multiple instruments. I started playing bass when I was about 12 years old. My early musical influences were the Stanley Brothers, Bill Monroe, the Hinsons, the Singing Cookes, the Spencers, the Easter Brothers and the MacGlothlins. I have played with The Whites, Chosen Generation, the Nippers, the Jeff Treece Band, and Young Harmony. In addition to the bass, I also play the piano, drums, mandolin, guitar and the dobro. I spend a lot of my free time practicing. My little girls both love to sing and are trying to play instruments!
My favorite color is blue and my favorite food is steak. I spend as much time as I can with my family when Im not on the road. I mow the yard during the summer and occasionally cook a little, especially lasagna.
JOSH SWIFT
Josh Swift was born on September 25th 1986 to Randy and Rhonda Swift. At age 2, Josh began playing drums with his father in church. At age 7 Josh and his family hit the road singing southern Gospel music. He got a head start on learning how life on the road was. As Josh’s drum skills increased, he became a highly regarded session drummer, even at such a young age. When Josh was just 16, He was playing a session when he saw his first Dobro. He had to have one! After about of year of “persuading” his dad to get him one, Mr. Swift called his dear friend and musical child Jeff Allen at Gibson Guitars to see what kind of deal He could get on a new Dobro. Jeff emailed back the next day and said “Its in my office. Just come sign for it and take it.” That’s when the new journey started! After just 2 weeks, Josh did his first recording with his new guitar! Josh continued to travel with his family but started to intigrate his Dobro playing into their singings. That’s when he got his first break. His family was singing with the Primitive Quartet and took the Primitives by surprise. They pointed Josh in the direction of Sparta TN, which is where Josh’s family farm is located, to a local band called Set Apart. Through Set Apart, He met a soon to be dear friend named Josh Miller who helped Swift get his foot in the door with Carrie Hassler a year later. After parting ways with Carrie Hassler, Josh was playing on the streets of Gatlinburg TN with some friends when Doyle Lawson walked up. Apparently Doyle and the rest of quicksilver liked his playing because he was hired on the spot at IBMA 07. On July 24th of 2008, Josh was married to his childhood sweetheart, now known as Mrs. Tobi Swift!!! “I cant believe the doors God has opened for me. He’s given me a great family, both personally and musically, a great wife, a great home, great friends, and a great talent. I am so blessed…”
