About me: D-PAN: Deaf Professional Arts Network a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization was originally established in 2006 in Ferndale, Michigan as the Deaf Performing Artists Network. D-PAN was created in recognition of the dire underrepresentation of deaf and hard of hearing individuals within the performing arts and the diminished accessibility of entertainment media - most notably music and music culture - to deaf audiences; its goal was the creation of accessible deaf-centric entertainment media and the expansion of professional opportunities for deaf and hard of hearing individuals within the music industry. D-PAN began by creating a series of groundbreaking ASL-centric music videos which received accolades from both hearing and nonhearing audiences around the world; despite this success, however, we quickly learned that the needs of deaf performers, professionals, and audiences extended well beyond our original areas of focus. More needed to be done.
In response to this pronounced need, D-PAN has now redefined itself to serve a broader constituency of deaf and hard of hearing creative personnel across a broad range of disciplines, and consequently, a wider array of prospective audience members. We have moved beyond our original emphasis upon music and music video to encompass the visual arts, a broader range of performing arts, and the media arts - inclusive of the techicians, craftspersons, and specialized personnel "behind the scenes" who collaborate to create films, television programs, websites/internet applications, games, stage productions, and a host of other media.
The new D-PAN aims to enhance the educational, professional, and creative opportunities available to both established and emergent deaf and hard of hearing creators by concentrating its efforts upon the creation of tightly-focused initiatives which produce demonstrable direct benefit to deaf creators and to the broader deaf/hard of hearing community. All share the common goals of creating greater opportunities for deaf and hard of hearing creative professionals, an expanded audience for their creative output, and broader popular recognition of the significant cultural contributions of deaf and hard of hearing creative professionals to society as a whole.
