   Dr. Burrito 's Blurbs
About me:
They call me Dr. Burrito, but my name is Crawford Coates. I was born and raised in San Diego, and I love the burritos here. They are delicious. They are simple things: fresh tortillas heated on the griddle, great hot sauces, a couple of hearty staples--there you have it! Nowhere else are they like this. I went to Yuma last year and ordered a burrito and it was like a flauta unfried. I went to San Clemente to a taco shop with a long line, and they served Sysco-brand hot sauce and the tortillas were steamed. See what I mean? Our burritos are singular. And their history is interesting to me. My guess is that burritos began in Sonora, Mexico, because that's where the first flour tortillas were made. My guess is that the burrito as we know it in California came into existence a long time ago but was formalized in the 1940s, as Mexican-American communities developed their character and self-awareness, and as the Second World War required great sacrifice. At that time San Diego had the second largest Mexican-American population in the state, after LA. It may have started here. I don't know. Tell me what you think. Who I'd like to meet:
Which brings me to San Francisco. I like the "Mission-style" burrito. It's good, especially after a few cervezas in the Mission or on a cold morning. I like the freshness of the beans and rice and the salsas are usually very tasty. But it is not the same as a San Diego burrito at all and I venture to say that it is less well defined and, to be honest, less perfect. Having said that, put a great Mission-style burrito up against your run-of-the-mill Robertos concoction and the SF guy might win. Might not. I only mention San Francisco because in the interview I gave to the Union Tribune I mentioned their burritos and said that they aren't as good as San Diego's. I wasn't being provacative intentionally but some people up north got wind of it and were not happy. O well. In burritos and on the internet, people get crazy. The super-ego goes to the wind. I'll try to have thick skin about it. Still, I love SF and the burritos are good up there too.

Dear Bobby,
I'm glad you asked this important question, for this problem claims millions and millions of what I call "silent victims" every day.
Although I am not technically a doctor of burritology, I do have an associate's degree in Sports Medicine and years of burrito-eating experience to back my claims up with. I also have a lab coat.
I didn't read your letter all the way through but I might have got the gist of it in my partial scan.
Let me know if I'm WAY off base here, but I think you have issues with your father BIG TIME. And separation anxiety. You suffer from a traumatic separation experience. It's OK. This is a safe place. Nobody reads MySpace pages anyway, especially not potential employers. Were you left somewhere as a little boy all alone for a long time?
I was. A long time at the zoo and I was locked in the kiddie corral with the goats for 2 days. There was 1 pig, the rest were goats, and me. But what does this have to do with burritos, Dr. Burrito? Everything!
See, if I'd had a burrito in the kiddie corral, I would have been happy, unless one of the goats ate through my pocket trying to get at it. But I could have bartered with the goats, maybe scored some smokes or something to help pass those excruciating hours in the pen. See what I mean!
So go ahead and have some fun. Switch it up. Invite a Dos Brasos pollo asado burrito over to a carne asada party from Santanas. Wear a blindfold. Try two at a time. Or try this: every burrito has a direction you should eat it in if you don't want it to become a mess. Eat it the other way! Self-exploration begets self-knowledge. Experiment safely!
Sincerely,
Dr. Burrito

Dear Dr. Burrito,

I am finding myself in a dilemma, and I am here seeking your professional advice. I am not one who is good with tough decisions, which is why I am seeking your counsel. In my eyes, Dos Brasas has a very delicious pollo asado burrito and Santanas has my favorite carne asada burrito. So whenever I have a craving for one of those two burritos, I know exactly where I need to go. However, I have heard the Dos Brasas makes a mean carne asada burrito and Santanas make a great pollo asada burrito. I am afraid that if I try either of these two burritos and they are as good as advertised, then it will put me in a predicament of where to go to get the burrito I am craving. For example: if I am craving a pollo asado burrito and I know of two places that make equally as tasty burritos and are both easily accessible to me, which place do I choose? Do I just never try a pollo asado burrito from Santanas in order to avoid this quandary?

Please advise.
