Dr. Burrito 's Blurbs |
About me:
They call me Dr. Burrito, but my name is Crawford Coates. I was born and raised in San Diego, and I love the burritos here. They are delicious. They are simple things: fresh tortillas heated on the griddle, great hot sauces, a couple of hearty staples--there you have it! Nowhere else are they like this. I went to Yuma last year and ordered a burrito and it was like a flauta unfried. I went to San Clemente to a taco shop with a long line, and they served Sysco-brand hot sauce and the tortillas were steamed. See what I mean? Our burritos are singular. And their history is interesting to me. My guess is that burritos began in Sonora, Mexico, because that's where the first flour tortillas were made. My guess is that the burrito as we know it in California came into existence a long time ago but was formalized in the 1940s, as Mexican-American communities developed their character and self-awareness, and as the Second World War required great sacrifice. At that time San Diego had the second largest Mexican-American population in the state, after LA. It may have started here. I don't know. Tell me what you think.

Who I'd like to meet:
Which brings me to San Francisco. I like the "Mission-style" burrito. It's good, especially after a few cervezas in the Mission or on a cold morning. I like the freshness of the beans and rice and the salsas are usually very tasty. But it is not the same as a San Diego burrito at all and I venture to say that it is less well defined and, to be honest, less perfect. Having said that, put a great Mission-style burrito up against your run-of-the-mill Robertos concoction and the SF guy might win. Might not.
I only mention San Francisco because in the interview I gave to the Union Tribune I mentioned their burritos and said that they aren't as good as San Diego's. I wasn't being provacative intentionally but some people up north got wind of it and were not happy. O well.
In burritos and on the internet, people get crazy. The super-ego goes to the wind. I'll try to have thick skin about it.
Still, I love SF and the burritos are good up there too.
