The Sonics, Billy Childish, surf instrumentals, Beach Boys, Misfits, The Mummies, The Mosquitos, Lancelot Link, The Munsters, anything with lots of reverb and trashy sound
DRAGULA - When you smell rotten flesh and gasoline in the air you best beware because the drag racing vampire is near.
Dragula was:
Toby "Black Belt" Holmes - The baddest bass playing mutha that ever came out of the Neal's Lighting empire.
Brian "Lumpy Deluxe" Hickman - This California kid worships at the throne of Ed "Big Daddy" Roth when he's not busy thumping the skins.
John "Whitey Black" Hudson - If Angus Young, Ace Frehley, and Buck Trent's DNA mixed it might produce a guitar player something like Whitey.
Wally - Raised on an evil mixture of monster films, professional wrestling, Francois Truffaut, and Shakespeare; Wally is a genuine unidentified flying oddball who sings and fakes guitar.
With an appearance by:
Drew Rydberg - This man stepped in on bass after Black Belt was abducted by a mighty female ninja. This resulted in the Rock Don't Run "Big Head" on Black Belt's body moment.
DRAGULA brought their own brand of blood burning nitro fueled rock and roll straight outta the garage to stages in Nashville and Murfreesboro from 1993 until 1997. They played shows with such luminaries as The Woggles, BR5-49, Los Straitjackets, Nine Pound Hammer, Man Or Astro-Man?, and 30 Amp Fuse. Highlights of such shows included the spontaneous audience wrestling matches which broke out during "Masked Phantom", Whitey spitting up blood, Wally doing the aardvark dance, and the band being introduced by Channel 5 weatherman Leland Statom one fine evening.
The band landed two tracks on the Spinout Records compilation Rock Don't Run before crawling back to their coffin in 1997.
The SONGS? Crummy 4 track recordings done in the showroom of Neal's Lighting store in Murfreesboro, TN. One microphone hanging down from some light fixtures captured the backing track then Wally or Toby cut the vocals later. No more than 3 tracks used ever.
Where are DRAGULA now?
Drew lives in San Diego where he does sound engineering for a video game company.
Black Belt recently escaped from the female ninja and has been seen lurking around the local music stores. The news is he is plotting a musical comeback that may or may not involve a one-off Dragula reunion.
Lumpy Deluxe goes by the name of Spacefink now while providing the primitive backbeat for the garage rock sci-fi sonic blast known as The Exotic Ones.
Whitey Black has emerged from his cocoon and become Zoomga the theremin and guitar playing master of The Exotic Ones.
Wally moved to the hills where he interrupts his bicycle rides with an occasional burst of songwriting and television viewing.
Will DRAGULA ever race again? Wally doubts it, but with Black Belt on the loose again anything is possible.
