Based in Toronto, Dr. dFunkt are an original funk-rock band. Started by singer-songwriter Kam Abdi, Dr. dFunkt have released three self-produced albums, 'Nuerotik', 'Running Hot' (nominated for a 2007 ECMA), and their 2009 release 'See Sharp'.
'See Sharp' takes the dance driven feel of 'Nuerotik' and mashes it with the live energy of 'Running Hot' to produce a sound that funks as hard as it rocks. The songs on the new record sonically capture the essence of its subject material about lost love, drug abuse, disenchantment, and blackouts. Dark basslines, funky guitars and soulfully melodic vocals are a Dr. dFunkt trademark. The current line-up sounds and feels like a band that has been together for an eternity: Kam Abdi (vocals, guitar), Jerrod Watts (guitar), Chuck Warren (bass), and Wally Schull (drums).
In October 2007, Kam and Chuck relocated the band from Halifax to Toronto. With perseverance, tenacity, and countless members changing, Dr. dFunkt have carved out an impressive niche for themselves in Toronto as an original funk rock band. They’ve played at most of the bars and venues in the city including a residency at The Hideout, couple of fund-raisers spearheaded by the band at El Mocambo, showcases presented by NuFunk Promotions at the Rivoli, The Horseshoe, and Lee’s Palace. The band recently completed a successful tour of Atlantic Canada and will be heading back in December. They have also started booking their tours of Ontario and Quebec for the coming months.
Dr. dFunkt are a hard working band with a love for touring and recording. Abdi recorded, engineered and mastered all of the band’s releases on a shoe string budget using not much more than a laptop and a microphone. ‘See Sharp’ was a labor of love and it shows in the preciseness of the production and the sincerity of the music.
