   About dreaming of tanks

A whole is the sum of its parts, and Dreaming of Tanks utilizes this simple approach to create a complicated sound. Like the pieces of a 3-D jigsaw puzzle, they layer clear, discernible tracks instrument by instrument, showcasing individual musical notions while contributing to a creative pool that is their music. The songs are intricate enough, but not overambitious or overcrowded with sound; in effect they’re transparent, tangible. The band is twisting and contorting our preconceived notions of an indie rock sound. Their songs are at times tortured, at times placating, and sometimes both at once. The drums seem the most belligerent of the players, while the bass, guitar, and vocals trade off in emotiveness. Bass lines tend to sing out an underlying theme or message that is picked up on, reinterpreted, and added to by the other instruments. All of this is topped off by ambitious vocals. Each Dreaming Of Tanks song is different from the next, and they’re all innovations in collective sound as a sum of its parts. --- S.D. Music Matters

Morricone Youth

Aug 11 2007 12:24 PM

Hey DOT! Avid soundtrack collector and guitarist of NYC's MORRICONE YOUTH Devon E. Levins is hosting 2 hours of "all-things cinematic" every Saturday at midnite (est) on East Village Radio heard via the internet at eastvillageradio.com.

Film and television soundtracks from around the globe past, present and future. Music from the Spaghetti Westerns of Sergio Leone and Corbucci, the Italian gialli of Argento and Baza, the Japanese Kaiju popularized by Godzilla and Mothra, the Edgar Wallace thrillers from Germany, Bollywood, the French New Wave, Blaxploitation, Film Noir...ok, you get the picture! But the soundtrack universe just might be vastly more diverse than you realize. Expect the usuals: Schifrin, Goldsmith, Rota, Komeda, Mancini, Umiliani, Legrand and, of course, Ennio Morricone, but don't forget that The Germs, Magma and De La Soul have all scored for film as well. If it was written for the moving image, it's fair game.
