Hayward's population is currently at about 150,000 and is rapidly growing. Almost half of the local population is under 21. Hayward's population has almost doubled in size since the 1950's, however the downtown area has gone derelict, basic city infrastructure has remained more or less the same, and the "growth" we have experienced has come in the form of vast strip malls and parking lots, crammed with chain stores and fast food joints.
If you want to do something around here besides stay at home, you can go out to eat, by some crap, get drunk, or hang out on the street only get messed with by cops. Hayward has become so corrupt they have made it possible to get arrested for doing nothing, and people do. To go see live music, you have to go to a bar or a club, and you have to be 21 to get in. There's not much here for art either, unless you're talking about the boring stuff that you see at your grandma's house. There's no place for bands to rehearse. Schools are closing down, and shutting down their art and music programs. Individuals have very few ways to get involved in their community, driving them closer to gangs and drugs.
So if almost half of Hayward's population is under 21, what are they doing? Wasting away, that's what.
That is why DreamLand is so important. We are giving locals a means to get involved, and supplying them with a safe outlet for their creativity. Dreamland Community Center is where people of all ages can gather to hear and play music, display their art, and have a good time. A place where the focus is on creativity and autonomy, NOT CONSUMERISM.
we are so excited that live 105 has been playing us on air but we want to keep it that way. when you have time, it would mean so much to us if you could just send a quick text requesting us.
