DREI are a trio whose diverse and well-grounded musical backgrounds allow them to create shaped moods and atmospheres through experimentation. They formed in 2003 to produce improvised-based music together, which has evolved with each performance into a varied & dynamic set of songs.
Since they formed, Drei have performed at Glastonbury Festival (Lost Vagueness) three years’ running, Brighton Festival (as house band for dance troupe Grrlesque), three Ladyfests (Leeds, Cardiff, & Turku), and headline tours of the UK & Europe.
They have also collaborated widely with other artists, resulting in making live and recorded soundtracks for theatre, film, and spoken word performances (including Spindrift’s Lexicon, The Black Ball, and film-maker Kitty Wallace’s Ki Ki Sea).
Drei have two CD releases (what girls do when they’re alone (2004) & To Meet You (2006)), and their single Pieces is due for release in 2008 on IRRK.
The musicians: Kirsten Elliott (flutes, vocals, melodica, electronics): challenges audience’s preconceptions of the flute’s role in music, running her instruments through guitar pedals to create a wide spectrum of sounds. She has performed in many other projects, including Submission Hold (punk), Web (folk punk), Urban Myth (free improv), and Freak Beat Reactor (drum'n'bass-ska-funk), and has recorded sessions for CBC Radio & BBC Radio 1 (UK). Kirsten has recently returned to live in Edmonton after living in the UK for seven years.
Bela Emerson (electric cello, vocals, electronics) has worked on jazz, folk, rock, pop, and avant-garde projects since 1994 in bands, duos, as a solo artiste, and as a session musician. She recorded four John Peel sessions for BBC Radio 1 as well as continuing to attract many other radio broadcasts for her solo works (inc. BBC Radio 3, Resonance FM), tours with percussion orchestra Stomp (including a ten-date run at Sydney Opera House in 2007) and performs extensively internationally, including solo tours of Canada & the USA in 2007.
Susanne Lambert (drums, percussion) is a multi-instrumentalist who has been performing and recording since 1993 in off-kilter pop, trip-hop, contemporary indie, swing, and post-rock projects, eg: Tula and the Bakelites & Charleyville (with whom she toured the west coast of Canada & the USA in 2007). She has also recorded John
Peel sessions for BBC Radio 1.
"Time and time again, Drei have warmed Lost Vagueness events with their unique and inventive charm. Layers of melodies and overtones of the unknown, laid down on a bed of sassy beats"
Karen Tart - Lost Vagueness Casino Stage Manager
"Subverted cocktail bar jazz with vivid improvisation and the occasional wry vocal"
Paul Morgan - Slightly Off-Kilter magazine
