Drew Brody is a NYC-based singer/songwriter whose influences include Joni Mitchell, Peter Gabriel, Rufus Wainwright, Damien Rice, Patty Griffin, Carly Simon, Elton John, Steve Goodman, Ani Difranco, Ryan Adams, and Fiona Apple, to name a few. He is also the lead singer of M-LAB, a piano-and-violin based rock band.
n the summers of 2006 and 2007, Drew hosted and curated the Baskethouse Acoustic Folk Series, a weekly FREE summer music festival at the Bitter End in New York's Greenwich Village.
Drew also created the Baskthouse Song-a-Week Challenge. This podcast ran for six months in 2006-2007 and challenged 12 independent, do-it-yourself singer/songwiters to record a new song each week. Over the course of the podcast, 185 songs were recorded.
In 2007, Drew founded Baskethouse Records and produced an acoustic solo album, released in June of 2007. The songs are an eclectic mix of original folk songs. On the album, Drew also recorded two of his favorite covers: John Prine's "Angel from Montgomery" (with vocals from Pamela Quinn and Amal Bouhabib) and Michael P. Smith's "The Dutchman."
Drew also composed the music for 5 BannerNY Productions, including the Lightning Field (winner, Outstanding Play at the 2005 Fringe Festival) and the new musical Cutman, which recently debuted at the New York Musical Theater Festival (NYMF) and is currently in development for a full production.
Recently, Drew co-produced, recorded, and mixed an album for singer/songwriter and Internet phenom Jay Brannan, titled In Living Cover. Drew is working on recordings for a second solo album, and his rock band M-LAB is releasing a CD in late 2009.
Your music is so good it's scary. Came by for a listen, fell into a comatose sleep and woke up drooling all over my keypad nearly electrocuting myself. Thank God your music woke me up. You saved my life and you have a really scary beautiful , expressive voice.
