Recording live in the studio over two days at Nashville’s historic House of David studios, Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors have captured the warmth and magic of the Christmas season with their jazz-infused folk rock interpretations of classic gospel Christmas songs and holiday seasonal standards. The rhythm section, comprised of Jon Radford on drums and Rich Brinsfield on Upright and Electric Bass, lays down a rich groove for multi-instrumentalist Nathan Dugger to work his guitar and piano chops in a variety of styles. The opening track, “Baby its Cold Outside” finds the band at once tight and playful as Drew and Ellie Holcomb bring back memories of Louis and Ella. Ellie goes solo on “Blue Christmas,” singing like a woman left for the holidays at the corner of Union Avenue. The bluesy remake of Chuck Berry’s “Merry Christmas Baby” finds Memphian Drew Holcomb right at home. Other standout tracks include the soul-rock interpretation of “Silent Night,” “Away in a Manger” as a lullaby reminiscent of David Wilcox, the campfire rendition of “Go Tell it on the Mountain,” and finally the heartbreaking “Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas.”
“A Neighborly Christmas” is sure to be a Christmas favorite in constant rotations in car stereos, Ipods, and CD Players everywhere.
