Art is mimesis, as the infamous Plato once said (you know, the guy who kept talkin' about that cave) and he may have been right on point. What is art, but an imitation of reality and pure replication of life? You can certainly apply this to the music industry, especially nowadays. Imitation, sampling, hypes. Every deejay plays the hit records and every minute we get hit by the next big thing. With new media like MySpace and YouTube, everyone can be famous (and entertained for hours, that is). Have we finally come to Warholian days? Selfrelfexivity, as seen in his work, has become more and more evident in the way we expresss ourselves in eveyday life. 'The medium is the message', as McLuhan said in The Medium is The Massage (you read that right, it says mássage) which comes to show the importance of knowing what you work with. The world has become our canvas (and everybody needs a little friend, right?). We're not saying you should mould your feelings into clay, but just keep in mind a little awareness of that which is going on around you and place yourself in the middle. Know what you want, spend a day in the library, bike around, get shit-faced in Amsterdam nightlife, and listen to some shady freejazz. No that we can't count on MTV anymore to tell us what to listen to (since they seem to have forgotten what the 'M' stands for) we have to go out on the limb on our own. Just like the Drie Keer Niks. As the DeWaele brothers once said: 'Everybody wants to be the deejay'.
