Ralph Drinkwater Floyd(1973-Present), or RD as he is known to those close to him, is an American Entertainer, Recording Artist, and Singer / Songwriter from Cut & Shoot, Texas. He was born in Fort Oglethorpe, GA, a small rural mountain community that borders Chattanooga, TN to a Welsh-Irish carpenter "Jack of all trades" and a French-Canadian / Iroquois nurse and school teacher. He grew up in Shepherd, Texas where he graduated Shepherd High School in 1991. He joined the military in 1992. From 1992 to 2003 he lived in Illinois, California, Texas, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, Florida, Arkansas, Louisiana and before finally returning home to Shepherd, TX.
"Some artists play for the money. Some play for the fame and attention. Some play for the girls. Some play for the free liquor. Some play because they simply are not good at anything else. Drinkwater plays for all of those reasons... AND because he loves music and enjoys playing music for people."
Drinkwater began playing guitar at the age of seven and began writing songs as a teenager. From the beginning Drinkwater knew he had a talent for story telling and poetry, adding music to the fray came naturally. His songs are a refreshing alternative to today's "cookie cutter" songs that are coming out of the Nashville Song Machine. His music is comprised of a little bit country, a little bit folk-rock, a whole lotta Texas and other fine Southern music. Though you will hear some tunes that highlight his travels to California, Chicago, New York and other places.
Drinkwater's voice is reminiscent of an earlier era, it is big and bold and sweet and rough. There is an honesty to his music that comes across just as clearly as his big Texas smile and modest disposition. A big fan of Texas Country and Southern Rock, Drinkwater draws on many of his influences and combines bits and pieces of each in his performance and songwriting.
Drinkwater's debut album will be finished in early 2008. It is aptly titled "Drinkwater Floyd ~ Half Lies & Partial Truths". You can catch Drinkwater performing at Premiere Texas Music Venues and Listening Rooms such as:

Interview 12/25/2007
What is your musical background.
"I started singing around three or four. I started playing guitar at seven. I took lessons for about a year and got tired of “Red River Valley” and decided to learn on my own. I sang gospel songs in church. I began writing my own songs in my teens and began performing them in my early twenties. I began performing in California over fourteen years ago and have lived and performed in Texas, New Jersey, Philadelphia, New York City, and Georgia. I toured for a while with some friends of mine. We played mostly the South Coastal States, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas and Louisiana. I currently play mostly in Texas and have began to gain notoriety in the Texas Music Circuit.”
How would you describe your music?
"I’m a bit of a chameleon. I play some country music but most of my music is what I’ve heard described as “A Hip Shakin’ Urbin Folk Rock with A Country Drawl,” but I’d just call it Folk Rock / Country. I have a very gravely sweet blues voice and get a lot of my inspiration from people like Joe Cocker, John Fogerty, and Bob Seger. Most of my music is just me and my Martin acoustic guitar. Occasionally I’ll have some friends play with me anything from fiddle to slide or electric guitar and drums. It really just depends on whose available at the time. My music itself is a blend of country, jazz, blues and southern rock with catchy hooks and interesting stories.”
How do you usually write a song?
"Each song is as different as each passing day. How and when they come really depend on the inspiration. Most of my songs come from events in my life, things I’ve seen, heard or experienced. Sometimes catchy phrases will pop out and beg to have a song written for them. Sometimes I’ll hear a person’s story and be so moved by their situation or their story that I put those feelings to song. Most of the time a song starts out just me and my acoustic guitar and sometimes they come quick and sometimes I have to massage them a bit. In the end I am a self described “nit-picker”. I pick songs apart and really try to apply the craft of songwriting to the lyrics and try to make the arrangements follow the lyrics and melody. Some songs take minutes while some other ones take years.”
What goals do you have for your music? “I want to continue to write true-to-life songs that come from stories in my life and in the lives of people that I meet along the way. I have a natural talent for feeling what other’s feel and then conveying those feelings in words, melody and music. I want to be the champion of the common folk, the people whose amazing stories might be lost otherwise. I believe that we as artists have to define what success means to us. To me, success is playing my own original music full-time, in front of people who love my music and my stories. Success is a calendar packed full of dates to play all around the world and the opportunity to focus all of my attention on my music and the stories of the lives of people I meet along the way. To me, success is hundred albums, a thousand great songs and a life filled with music and stories that document my travels.”
