New music (only locally released previously) from one of LA's most notorious horn bands! Drive All Night rose quickly to the top of the LA club scene, and just as it seemed they were poised to take the music industry by storm they just as quickly disintegrated. Even some of the bands members weren't sure what actually happened but without their talented visionary, Charlie Mead (recently residing in St. Louis, MO), there just was no Drive All Night. No known recordings exist of their club dates in Los Angeles, or their various bookings in Tahoe. The powerful music was - well, there just was no box to put them in at the time and that's how things went in LA in the 80s. Drive All Night's music was simply just ahead of it's time. Fortunately for us there were studio recordings. The original 24-track analog tapes have not been recovered (yet?) but these "final mix" duplicates have been found in relatively good condition. As you'll hear, the arrangements by Charlie Mead, the tight as hell rhythm section, the super funky bass of Dean Taba, the guitar work of Adam Levy (now with Norah Jones), and the incomparable horn section (check out Bob Clark's outrageous trumpet licks that close out the horn section segment of the solo on "Drive All Night" - song 2 above) make these recordings ridiculously beyond space and time. The vocals are a glorious and complimentary part of the band's chemistry. Angie Whitney's and Mike Rechtien's (see friend links below to Angie Whitney and rekteen) powerful vocal performances become part of the band as a whole. They aren't way out front nor do they take the usual huge slice of the aural spectrum like most commercial endeavors - no radio mixes, these!! Once thought lost forever, these tracks have been recently rediscovered. Right on!
