"Dronevolk" has turned out a timelessly unspectacular but all the more intimate portrait, focussing on nothing but the essence and leaving hype and medial mysticism far behind. -Tobias Fischer, TOKAFI webzine

About the documentary

Dronevolk revolves around four bands that play a prominent role in the ever growing drone and weirdfolk scene in Belgium. Jef Mertens made a selection of musicians to focus his film, not particularly on the scene itself, but more so on the people behind the music, their motivations and of course their MUSIC. From Kiss The Anus Of A Black Cat's dark and moody folk, Bear Bones, Lay Low's drone based move to Belgium to Silvester Anfang's ungoing discussions and Ignatz' stories of playing on a boat, the film exhibits a certain RAWNESS through stumbling interviews, live footage and exclusive recording sessions. Shot straight to tape March through October 2007, Dronevolk serves as a music document for any self-respecting music lover.

About the director

Graduated as a photographer in 2001, Jef Mertens started creating his first video productions while documenting Sonic Youth's touring through Europe over the years. From 2006 on he also documented two Fat Cat festivals in Zaal Belgie as well as the last two Kraak festivals. It was shooting Bear Bones, Lay Low at the Kraak festival March 2007 that had sparked the idea for creating Dronevolk.
