Doc Scott's Interests
|
| General | Most everything I am interested in cannot be used in any truly productive way. It is a good thing I attended a state-run college. But I'll say: reading, baseball and softball, traveling, hiking, making year-end mixes (see the blog for links), blogging, computers, iPod Nation, the occasional videogame, microbrews, chronicling the slow decline of the Empire, linguistical trends, irony, jabberwocky, effluvia, etc. etc. There are also a couple of other things too indescribably nerdy to mention. So use your imagination.
| | Music |
WHAT I TELL PEOPLE: Talking Heads, Nuggets, Shins, Nada Surf, Decemberists, New Pornographers, Arcade Fire, Sixties Motown, the National, Midlake, Thermals, Sparklehorse, Ben Kweller, Broken Social Scene, stuff that sounds like the Beatles put in a blender, Leonard Cohen, My Morning Jacket, Elvis (Costello, of course), the Polyphonic Spree, Ash, Gomez, Idlewild, Spoon, rock music with strings, the Black Keys, the Flaming Lips, Supergrass, Metric, other chirpy Canadians, Ben Folds, the Clash, the Jam, Brits that rip off the Jam (Wombats, Kooks, Maximo Park, Futureheads, Art Brut, The Rakes, Little Man Tate, &c.), Midnight Oil, the Hold Steady if that guy could sing worth a damn, Squeeze, Crowded House, XTC, songs that get stuck in your head in the good way, miscellaneous kickass Portlanders (M. Ward, Viva Voce, Village Green, Young Immortals, &c.), the best of classic rock, other Key Hipster Band Influences of the Moment.
BUT ACTUALLY: Chuck Mangione, Creed, Olivia Newton-John, later Meat Loaf, Steelheart, John Tesh (just Live at Red Rocks, the studio albums lack drive), post-1982 Rolling Stones, Randy VanWarmer, the Singing Nun, Chumbawamba, Britny Fox, Daughtry, Christopher Cross, Toni Basil, Living in a Box, Starship (not that poser-y Jefferson Airplane), Jim Brickman, and post-"Suspicious Minds" Elvis. | | Movies | High Fidelity, In the Name of the Father , The Science of Sleep, Lost in Translation, Velvet Goldmine (good music), 28 Days Later, other films about zombies, Garden State, Closer, Amelie, Royal Tenenbaums, Sliding Doors or any other what-if film, L'Enfant, Labyrinth, Lord of the Rings, anything by Cameron Crowe, even the highly underrated Elizabethtown... just not the one about Scientology (stupid Tom Cruise and his thetans). I also like queerbo foreign films from the annual Portland International Film Festival. Subtitles are the fire.
 | | Television | The Office.... and, well, that's it. (My life has never been improved by cable television.) Once upon a time I wanted to be a sketch comedian, but that was before I realized I had little talent and wasn't that funny.
Okay, fine. I like the Amazing Race. Most of the time. And Grey's Anatomy, but only to player-hate on that sonofabitch McDreamy. | | Books | As many as possible. Anything but self-help (I'm fine, thanks), stuff about cats, and Stephen King. I enjoy both memoirs (Eggers, Klosterman) and the fantastical stuff (Tolkien, Martin, Weis/Hickman). Those two subgenres couldn't be any more different- unless you're James Frey, of course. Libraries give us power. | | Heroes | People who agree with me. |

Doc Scott's Blurbs |
About me:
I'm fairly new to Portland, having moved here after twenty-eight and a half years in Ohio and two months spent backpacking in Europe (spring '05). I like the weather and the mass transit here, but I don't think you can just shake the Midwesterner out of yourself after so long. Also, my new job helping kids learn beats the crap out of participating in war profiteering. I like good radio, large vocabularies, iPodding-while-walking, Canadian rock bands, sharp writing, beer-flavored food, and dreamworlds of magic. I dislike watermelon, driving, televised news, and anything associated with Dane Cook or the Dave Matthews Band.
|
Who I'd like to meet:
Locals that are too old to be young and too young to be old. And if you have Midwestern roots, prepare to bullshit with me about it for awhile.
