Dr. Sketchy St. Louis Don't miss our November 15th Sketchy's with Lola van Ella's Burlesque Army! It's going to be the craziest one yet! Posted at 11:54 PM Oct 27 view more
Dr. Sketchy's is the little Brooklyn event that became a movement. Founded in 2005 by artist Molly Crabapple, Dr. Sketchy's asked a simple question. Why can't drawing naked people be sexy?
Here's our attempt at an answer.
We combed New York to find the most beautiful burlesque dancers, the most bizarre circus freaks, and the most rippling hunks of man. Then, every other Saturday, we let you draw them for three hours. Interspersed with posing are ridiculous drawing contests (best left handed drawing? Best incorporation of a woodland animal?) where you can win booze or prizes.
We hauled the lights, sent out thousands of listings, and wheatpasted posters during snowstorms. We also insisted on our models making the highest wages in the city.
Dr. Sketchy's has received scads of media attention for it's combination of burlesque and art. We've been written up in The LA Times, the Washington Post, Time Out New York, Time Out London, The Village Voice, The Sunday Age in Melbourne, NY Press, Gothamist, Fleshbot, The National Post (Canada), Nikkei Trendy (Japan) and scores of alt.weeklies. Talking heads have talked about us on NBC,BBC, WPIX, NPR and The Hi Definition Network. We were chosen as "Best Wacky Life Drawing Session" by Shecky's 2007 Best of New York.
In the meantime, artists across the world wanted in on our three hours of decadence. Starting in Norfolk, Virginia, but soon spreading from Hollywood to London to Melbourne, Dr. Sketchy's began popping up across the globe. Now we're a 40-city strong art community, with new branches starting each week.
Dr. Sketchy's St. Louis is back with a sexy vengence and is being presented at Evil Prints every 3rd Sunday of the month and is hosted by Tom Huck and Lola van Ella. Dr. Sketchy's St. Louis was started by the lovely Courtney, aka Jenny Longshot, and we hope to do her proud!
Who I'd like to meet: The St. Louis chapter of Dr. Sketchy's is just starting out, so we'd like to meet the following:
- Interested models! Are you a derby girl, burlesque performer, body builder, comic book geek, bartender, muscle man, drag performer, magician or circus freak? We'd like YOU to be our model for a session of Dr. Sketchy's! It doesn't matter what you look like as long as you're up for the challenge of posing for a room of art monkey's for 3 hours or so wearing your most interesting and flamboyant costume (or lack there of)!
- Interested sponsors! Do you have free stuff that you just have to give away? We're looking for gift certificates, booze, comics, t-shirts, taxidermy animals, cds, concert tickets - whatever you want (or don't want, as the case may be)!
- Performers! Can you whistle really well? Can you play 80's TV theme songs on the accordian blindfolded? Do you eat fire? Are you under the impression you can do stand-up? Dr. Sketchy's St. Louis loves a good half-time show, and if you'd be interested in showing off your talents for us, we'd love to have you!
- ART MONKEYS! Are you an artist, or do you want to be one? Art monkeys of all skill levels are invited to attend Dr. Sketchy's St. Louis - as long as they provide their own supplies, don't hit on the models, and don't creep out the other artists. Students! Bring you teachers! Teachers! Bring your students! No Jerks!
The weather's much better, so you can shag your asses out and take advantage of the great deals and selection of Rockabilly, Punk, and Hot Rod Kulture clothing and accessories found only at FiFi's!!
30-50% off select tops, tees, shorts, skirts, and dresses!
