Interests

  • General

Poker, game theory, music composition, marksmanship, writing, films of all sorts, sequential art (a fancy way of saying "comic books"), hospice care, raising my two kids to not be idiots who think the world owes them something.
  • Music

System of a Down, Ozzfest second stage acts, Cattle Decapitation (for the comedy aspect), F Art Ensemble of Greensboro, Joe Cumia, Sleeves, Perrynoid, VOMICK.
  • Movies

All Kubrick, from The Killing to Eyes Wide Shut. Favorites: 2001, Full Metal Jacket, and The Shining. I like a lot of other movies, but who doesn't and who cares? These are some directors that deserve respect: PT Anderson, The Coen Brothers,
  • Television

I'm a junk Tee Vee fan...Can't get enough of "The Most Dangerous Catch" or anything with "...of Love" in the title. Still watch "Survivor" for the game theory aspect. It's amazing how many people go on that show and have NEVER WATCHED THE SHOW. Idiots!

Currently watching "The Office" and "30 Rock"; I am drawn to "I'm a Celebrity..." like a fly is to a nice steaming pile of fecal matter. Still a big "Battlestar Galactica" geek. My being a fan of that show is a story in itself...I was at Dewayne's World of Comics and Games (the greatest game store in the country, by the way), when some nerdy geek was standing there telling me "Battlestar Galactica is the GREATEST SHOW ON TEE VEE, DUDE! I SWEAR!" I was like "you are the stupidest nerd I've ever met...how could that be true?" So I saw the season one box set on sale for $29 at a local discounter and I bought it just to watch it, hate it, and go back to the store and smash that guy in the head next time I saw him. Five minutes into the first episode and I was sitting there, jaw dropping, yelling "THIS IS THE GREATEST SHOW ON TELEVISION!!!!"

  • Books

Too many to mention. I will quote my friend Murray and state unequivocably that I get on my knees every day and thank God that I was born in a country that speaks English so I can read Shakespeare in his native tongue. Oh, and Orson Scott Card, too.
  • Heroes

Alan Watts, Gus Grissom, Ed White and Alan Chaffee, Ron Bennington, Fez Whatley, Gregg "Opie" Hughes, Anthony Cumia

About me:

"Weird Medicine" is our attempt at bringing medical information to an audience that would never otherwise listen to a medical show on the radio.

Perhaps we succeeded; when P.A. John and I set out, I figured it'd be either a mild success or a total train wreck. I'm cool with either, as both will give me stories to tell for years to come. I invite you to read the all-too self-indulgent multi-part blog diary of the weekend we spent putting "Weird Medicine" on the air. It was just so insane, I had to write it down for my own sake, savoring every detail. I'm sure it's just torture for anyone else to read, but there it is.

It has been a rush meeting all of the people I most admire in the radio business, including Gregg "Opie" Hughes, Anthony Cumia, Fez Whatley, and the amazing Ron Bennington, the greatest broadcaster in the history of the business.

Check out our webpage http://www.drsteve.com ...every weird medicine show is currently archived there.

I've had a lot of people ask me about the theme music to the show; it's the creation of Sherwin Sleeves, playright, musician, and all-around good egg. His work can be heard frequently on 'The Ron and Fez Show', on XM 202.

"Paging Doctor Steve" by Sherwin Sleeves:

I’ve got diphtheria crushing my esophagus
I’ve got ebola virus dripping from my nose
I’ve got the leprosy of the heart valves
Exacerbating my incredible woes
I want to take my brain out and blast it with a wave
An ultrasonic echographic and a pulsatating shave
I want a magic pill for my ailments
The health equivalent of Citizen Kane
And if I don’t get it now in a tablet
I think I’m doomed and I’ll have to go insane
I want a requiem for my disease
So I’m paging Dr. Steve

[Chorus]
I take a scalpel
To the vertabrae
Need some suction
In the carotid
Bring the crash cart
And do the kung fu
With the shock pads
And now he’s dead uh oh…

I’m in the mortuary dead as a doornail
I’m posthumous, incredulous and cold
I’ve got a bad case of the deadsies
Paralyzing all my thoughts and bones
Someone take their brain out and slip it in my head
I can’t do it for myself cause I’m already dead
I’m thinking Frankenstein to the maximum
Shoot some lightning in the marrow of my bones
Or mark an expedite on the afterlife
And push me quickly into heaven with a heave
But if I don’t get in for my cause of death
I’m blaming Dr. Steve

Who I'd like to meet:

I have met all of my heroes. Now what do I do?
