What if one of your good friends got HIV? It happens to teens in America more than you might think. Drug abuse is one of the main routes of exposure to HIV/AIDS, and drugs involving needles aren’t the only way to get it. Research has shown that alcohol consumption and the use of other non-injection drugs can also lead to HIV infection. To understand how, you have to "learn the link." Drugs can change the way the brain works, disrupting parts of the brain that people use to weigh risks. That can lead to bad decisions, like engaging in risky sexual behavior, which can lead to HIV.
The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) has created this Learn the Link campaign to demonstrate how drugs and alcohol can lead to HIV infection. Although the characters are fictional, this situation can happen to anyone. Learn more at hiv.drugabuse.gov, and help send the message by clicking "Forward to Friend."
