hi, i'm nick, guitarist/vocals and songwriter for my band the drugstore cowboys.i didnt want two myspace account's for personal and the band so this site is for both! about the band.....................High Octane Roadhouse Rockabilly maybe thats the first easiest way to start to describe the wall of sound the Drugstore Cowboys have been performing to their audiences since their formation in 1998.
In this time the band have performed in excess of 400 shows up and down their home country of England, as well as shows in Scotland, Ireland, France, Germany and the USA.
The band draw from many musical styles, from traditional 50s rock n roll, country, tex mex and blues influences, through to 60s, garage, and surf. A live Drugstore show is a real deal, high energy performance, and certainly unpredictable in their choice of material. The bands live set consists of mainly original songs and some interesting surprise covers, such as a souped up version of Kenny Rogers Lucille, through to a Dick Dale/Link Wray instrumental blast. Its all in there!
The Drugstore Cowboys pride themselves in appealing and performing to a wide range of music lovers from all walks of life, and have, over the years, opened up shows for varied artists. Including, from personal favourites such as The Paladins, BR549, Jesse Dayton, Legendary shack shakers, Hacienda bros, Reverend Horton Heat and Scotty Moore to bands such as The Damned, Spear of Destiny and Jools Holland.
The Drugstore Cowboys were signed to Raucous Records in 1998 and released their debut CD Crash & Burn. Tracks from this CD were also issued on various compilation CDs and received celebrated reviews and various airplay on local and foreign radio stations. That same year Drugstore Cowboys frontman Slim (a huge admirer of the man in black) also had a solo recording of the song Ring of Fire (a live Drugstore favourite) released on a Johnny Cash Tribute CD Get Rhythm. This was picked out as a highlight on a five star review in a country music international magazine. Since this time the band line-up has changed several times, explaining an absence of recordings/releases over the last three years or so. But with the current steady line-up in place, and a whole load of new original songs and new cd to be released v-soon the band are back where they belong on the road giving their all, a real dose of drugstore rock n roll.
DAMON CLARIDGE (25) DRUMS,
damon joined the band in 2005 replacing ex-big town playboys drummer and now 'mike sanchez' drummer mark morgan who had been with the drugstore cowboys for approx 2 years whilst mike sanchez was off playing with 'bill wyman's rhythm kings'. damon has more than compansated and the sheer energy he puts into his playing (and face pulling)is quite something!
damon being an all rounder (not a typical drummer!) write's, compose's and records his songs at his home studio. damon at present is recording and engineering his way through the bands next cd "CHOP POKER" due for release this year.
TOM BULL (20) DOUBLE BASS,
with the recent departure of former bassist of 6 years gary powell along came bull fiddle maestro 'tom bull' armed with a bass and bow! nick was to then explain that the only bow he would ever require is maybe a bow & arrow for some of the more rowdy venues the band have come across over the years!
tom based in leicester commutes for gigs from leeds where he is studying at the leeds collage of music. as well as playing guitar/bass along with nick in leics ska outfit 'EL PUSSYCAT' tom can be heard playing in jazz and orchestral bands such as BIG FILTHY JAZZ COLLECTIVE and DUKE ELLINGTON REPORATORY ORCHESTRA.
that said' he's abusing his bass quite comfortably now with the cowboys and has proved himself to be a bit of a slapper!
toms brings the average age of the band down nicely and completes was is definately the strongest drugstore line up to date.
NICK DRUGSTORE guitar/Vocals
Nick Whitfield is the founder member of the band. Nick started out his career originally as a drummer and had his first band/record deal at the age of 16. With Nick sat at the back of the stage playing drums watching his fellow bandmates perform songs hed written and generally having more fun, it wasnt long before Slim moved on and fronted his own bands. Since then Nick has played drums/bass/guitar for many bands in the last 20 years. Some of his previous bands include The Hellkatz, Cellmates, Hayriders and El Pussycat Ska. more recently nick was playing bass with paul ansells no.9 and has recently finished a european tour playing double bass with stray cat 'slim jim phantom' and darrell higham. Nick has also released solo recordings of which have been featured on various compilation CDs.
