Make no mistake--- Drumattica is, truly, Portland's "super group". The band started out in 2000 as a side project for two local veteran players: Brian Lehfeldt (Sweaty Nipples, Everclear, Tripolar) and Keith Brown (TV:616). The two pounded out tribal beats over electro synth beds, creating an aesthetic one fan described as "taiko on crack!".
Drawing from a pool of talented friends and colleagues, Drumattica quickly blossomed into a full-fledged band. Floater front-man, Rob Wynia, was the first to join the line-up, adding his distinctive vocals and complex, literary lyrics. A few serendipitous guest appearances by Jen Folker (vocalist for Portland's electronica darlings, Dahlia) cemented her place in the permanent line-up.Their live shows finally culminated in the release if their first album "A Part of Something" in 2003.
After five years of wildly popular live performances, Drumattica releases its much anticipated follow-up, "Train Out of Time" (due out June 3, 2008). Their sophomore effort expands on the promise of their debut. Guitarist Dave Amador (Floater) added a touch of swirling psychedelia and bassist Eric Helzer helped to anchor the new sound.
The sounds (electronic and organic) are strikingly varied, the songs are emotionally rich. Folker's sensual playfulness is showcased as well as Wynia's lyrics, steeped in metaphor and wit. The chemistry between Wynia and Folker, only hinted at on two duets previously, is given the spotlight. Their vocal harmonies are a fantastic mix of 70's pop sensibility and a music theorist's dream of a-tonal combinations that go beyond the standard "a fifth above" instinct.
The stage is where the 6 piece thrives with years of performance under each musicians belt the songs take on a whole new life of their own. As with all things seeing is believing and hearing is even better. With Drumattica all senses are aroused with dark sensual precision.
