| Drum Fantasy Camp was founded in 2007 by camp director Steven
Orkin. The idea for the camp came from Orkin's perception that
drummers worldwide wanted to study and gain exposure from great
drummers. The camp is typically held in mid-August and runs five days. Camp usually starts on a Saturday with a Noon clinic. The clinic is the opening session and features a performance and roundtable discussion with all of our instructors. It runs until 3:00 p.m. Later that night, there is a concert that once again features all of the instructors. Our goal between the clinic and concert is to introduce everyone to broad educational concepts and the end result music education: making music in a professional manner. Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m. is the first master class session. It runs until Noon, when everyone breaks for lunch. The second class runs from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.. Each attendee is given a full camp schedule and the classrooms are all in the same hallway. The classes have no more than 15 drummers in them, ensuring an intimate yet dynamic class experience. On Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday nights, we run Jam Nights from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Jam Nights are fun and casual evenings where campers hang out and watch each other perform with our world-class band. The band is made up of guitarist Vinny Valentino (Vital Information, George Benson, etc.), Baron Browne (Jean-Luc Ponty, Billy Cobham, Vital Information, etc), and Chrissi Poland (Sam Moore, Moby, Solo). During Jam Nights, instructors also get up to play and also tend to accompany many of the campers during their songs. It can be pretty amazing looking over to see Dave Weckl on timbales while you're playing drums with the band. Drum Fantasy Camp is a completely friendly and non-competitive experience. From the instructors to the Jam Night musicians, the message is consistent: we play drums to make music. Throughout the camp, bonds are formed between campers. Many exchange phone numbers and e-mail addresses when the camp ends. It really is an incredible experience. Click here to learn more! |
